Xiaomi to make an entry into the US market by 2019

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, off late, has been emerging as a strong contender. It has won the hearts of many by selling its high-end premium looking smartphones at an affordable price. Already making its presence felt across 30 markets around the world where it officially sells its products, Xiaomi is yet to make an entry into the US market.

But that doesn’t mean the US customers have not been able to purchase Xiaomi handsets. There are some Chinese retailers who provide international shipping for Xiaomi’s devices, but this comes along with a few complexities such as warranty service and network bands problem. But that should end in a couple of years as Xiaomi’s new head has announced plans to enter the US market in two years.

Wang Xiang, Xiaomi’s new global leader who took over the role from Hugo Barra, said there are definite plans for a US launch in two years. He said:

We don’t have a fixed timeline, but probably two years, if not sooner. It’s ambitious but we want to get into these markets as soon as possible.

Xiaomi wants to be well prepared before making a foray into the US, as it doesn’t want to disappoint its many fans there. As such, it is working out how to deal with the different LTE bands in the US and the customizations requirement of the local carriers. Once these issues are taken care of, which probably will take two years, Xiaomi will be well pre-prepared to make a boom in the US market. In the words of Wang Xiang:

We don’t want to make a random decision. Oh say, here’s the Mi 6, let’s try the US market, if it doesn’t work let’s just leave. No, we want to be well-prepared and make a boom in those markets.

  1. Xiaomi has been releasing great phones recently and seem to have decided to enter the US market.I really hope they do this right. They do have a chance at having a huge crowd there wanting their phones but it remind me of LeEco,Another Chinese company offering really good specification at a low price. It might not be the same as Xiaomi is a more heard off name than the LeEco,

    1. Talking about LeEco here, it’s not just a Smartphone manufacturer. It’s actually one of the most innovative technology brands out there right now, though it does not share the same limelight as others. From Smartphones to Smart TVs to even an Autonomous car, it covers the hottest range of tech products. It even has an Android powered super bicycle :D, how cool is that?

    2. An Autonomous car? Haven’t heard about that ,I’ll be sure to check that out 😀 and the Bike too .Technology is going places these days XD Shame they’re going to withdraw and also sell their assets in the Silicon Valley 😐 I guess they shoud’ve planned their entry strategy better :/

    3. Yes, not much is known about them, and as you said, with how diverse offerings, they are bringing out, it’s no wonder they reported losses for the quarter. Mastering their trade seems the need of the hour, and probably one or two, at that. Not all of them at once.

    4. Its suffering badly in the US though, the business didnt quite catch on over there. People are getting laid off. But the company like you said is really innovative. The autonomous car you mentioned is an actual Tesla rival…

    5. Ah Hmm! They had become too spontaneous, I mean, with not many actual offerings in the market, they needed to focus on extending their reach in the existing markets and existing product line, before ambitiously venturing to the US. I was mentioning about their products, because it has not just been limited to smartphones. Still their effort is commendable, and I hope, they get into their A-game soon.

    6. Yeah, entering into the smartphone market right now is really tough. They could have gained more popularity like the Xiaomi series in the US first before actually setting up shop there.

    7. Agreed. They should look forward to end this fiscal year overcoming their deficit and record profits.

    8. Hmm yeah :/ That would be a long tough road though.

  2. looks like US has to wait for two more years to get their hands on the powerful yet affordable Xiaomi devices!! Hope Xiaomi will work on their smartphone stocks before entering the market!!

  5. This will get most of the android fanatics out there in the west fluttering with joy.
With unlocked phones being expensive and phones under contract coming with a bunch of bloatware, the users in USA have shown a lot of appreciation to companies like the Oneplus for bringing cheap, affordable, unlocked phones with flagship level specifications for such affordable prices. And Xiaomi seems to be capable of doing that even more so than Oneplus in fact.
I would be happy to see revolutions like this being brought about more by tech companies to make tech a lot more affordable seeing how necessary and convenient it has become in everyday life.
