Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is without a doubt one of the best budget phones on the market. The phone succeeds the highly successful Redmi Note 4 from 2017, which means you are still getting an equally impressive piece of hardware at an affordable price tag.
Despite the huge promise, the Redmi Note 5 is unfortunate that it still carries the Xiaomi brand that hasn’t made a name for itself because of software updates. But if you are still interested to know all about Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Android 8.0 Oreo update, this page has everything you need, including any other software updates info for the budget phone.
It’s worth noting that the Redmi Note 5 is a rebranded Redmi 5 Plus that was released in China late last year. As such, we may refer to older posts in our database, so don’t be surprised if you end up on a Redmi 5 Plus page.
With that out of the way, let’s dive right into it.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Oreo update: When to expect
- No official confirmation yet
- Expect Oreo to roll out in Q3 2018
- The phone shouldn’t be short of Oreo custom ROMs in the near future.
- Xiaomi’s Oreo beta build is out for the Mi 6 and Mi MIX 2

As pointed out earlier, Xiaomi is not one of the revered brands when it comes to software updates. But like a few other Android OEMs, it has shown signs of life in the recent past — they are now testing Oreo beta for the Mi Mix 2 and Mi 6. While this doesn’t guarantee that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 will be updated to Android Oreo, given that there is no official confirmation about the update yet, Xiaomi’s record of updates as regards Redmi Note 4 says a lot about what to expect.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is the successor to the Redmi Note 4, which was released in January 2017 and came preinstalled with Android Marshmallow. Xiaomi rolled out Nougat for the Redmi Note 4, meaning they do provide at least one Andriod OS version update to their Redmi sets, which is why we can be hopeful of Oreo for the Redmi Note 5 too.
Still, with Xiaomi being one of the slowest OEMs in rolling out software updates, you can only look forward to a possible Q3 2018 release.
Competition: Given that one of the Redmi Note 5’s main rivals, Honor 7X, is set to receive the update soon and another, the Honor 9 Lite, comes preinstalled with Oreo, we hope Xiaomi will feel a little compelled to roll out Android 8.0 to the Note 5 sooner than later.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 update table
|Model (Region)||Date||Software version||Current OS||Changelog|
|India||12 March 2018||MIUI9 V22.214.171.124||Android 7.1.2||Improved system stability and optimized system performance|
|Global||27 Feb 2018||MIUI9 V126.96.36.199||Android 7.1.2||Improved system stability and optimized system performance|
Xiaomi’s Oreo update is already rolling out to Mi A1 and even though this is because of the reduced work needed thanks for the clutter-free Android One, it does show that Xiaomi is stepping up its game in software updates. However, some users are reporting issues with the Mi A1 Oreo update, which means the company is still far from perfect as far as timely updates are concerned.
The Oreo update will start rolling out to the high-end Xiaomi Mi 6 and Mi MIX 2 before expanding to other Xiaomi phones, among them the Redmi Note 5. We don’t know when Xiaomi plans to roll out the stable Oreo to the two flagships, but we are adamant it’ll be before the end of Q1 2018.
An update to Android Oreo will not only bring new features like picture-in-picture, Autofill, redefined Settings app, revamped notifications center, notification snooze, etc., but the Redmi Note 5 will also get a new MIUI skin, up from Nougat-based MIUI 9, and performance improvements.
