Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Oreo update: Snapdragon variants grab MIUI 9.6.1 and MIUI 10 beta 8.7.12 updates

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4 is currently one of the most successful smartphones the company has ever produced. The Chinese phone maker, in fact, claims to have sold over 5 million Redmi Note 4 units in India since its launch in January this year.

The smartphone was launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow on-board and was then upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat later. At the moment, all eyes are on the company as far as Android Oreo updates are concerned, but before we talk about Oreo, let’s shed some light on the company’s own skin, MIUI 10.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 MIUI 10 update

Considering how popular the Redmi Note 4 is across the globe, it was never a doubt that the phone will be included on Xiaomi’s list of devices to be updated to the new MIUI 10. Launched at the end of May 2018, the new MIUI 10 powers the Mi 8 series out of the box and has already arrived on several devices like the Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro, however, we still don’t have the exact date as to when the Redmi Note 4 will be joining the party.

Until then, those feeling a little geeky can grab the Chinese version of the MIUI 10 that’s meant for the country’s Redmi Note 4. However, this means that you will be using software that is meant for use in China alone and thus you won’t be able to access things like Google Apps. On the brighter side, we have this taken care of by this suite of GApps that you can download right now.

Alternatively, you can also wait for the official Global version that should be released shortly. Although we don’t have a date, the fact that the Chinese version is up for download means the global version will be available soon, too.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Oreo update: What to Expect?

Xiaomi has never been the one to provide quick software updates. There’s no other way to put it. For instance, a majority of the company’s smartphones are still on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. And it was only recently the company started testing Nougat-based MIUI 9 for its phones. Such delay can pretty much be attributed to the company’s heavily skinned MIUI custom skin.

Lenovo K8 Note Oreo update: All news and expected release date

Xiaomi, although fairly old, still doesn’t have enough resources akin to Samsung or other tech giants in the industry to develop custom skins and optimize them for every phone it releases. That’s exactly the reason why the company prioritizes its high-end and most popular devices and rolls the latest Android OS to those devices first.

Android 8.0 Oreo Root (Pixel and Nexus devices)

Taking into account the Redmi Note 4’s popularity and success, it’s almost certain — although not confirmed by the company — that many expected Xiaomi to update the device Android 8.0 Oreo. In which case, it would be able to make use of all the new features the latest Android OS brings to the table. Unfortunately, this is increasingly becoming unlikely.

Oreo update brings new features like Picture in Picture mode, revamped Settings menu, improved Notifications shade, Notification Dots and Notification Channels, faster booting time, Android Instant apps, Autofill, better battery life, rounded emojis, and more.

How to download Oreo update

Update [October 02, 2017]: Xiaomi hasn’t revealed anything about when they plan to release the Oreo update for the Redmi Note 4, or whether they intend to do so or not, however, you can now have a taste of Android 8.0 update on your Redmi Note 4 thanks to custom ROMs. There are two ROMs available now, one is the ever-popular LineageOS 15 ROM, and another one is Cardinal AOSP 5.0 ROM.

This page is all about official news for the Xiaomi software update for the Redmi Note 4, so head over to the Oreo custom ROMs page for the Redmi Note 4 here. There, we are providing the download links for both of the ROMs, along with installation guide which remains same for both ROMs. Have fun!

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4: When to Expect?

  • No official confirmation yet
  • Q2 2018 is a good bet for Oreo release!
  • Oreo available unofficially via custom ROMs, download here

Xiaomi hasn’t revealed its plans with regards to Android 8.0 Oreo for the Redmi Note 4 (or any of its phones) just yet. Judging by the company’s history, though, it would take them a while to push the Android 8.0 update to Redmi Note 4. Our money is on Q2 2018.

How to install Redmi Note 4 update

There are different methods you can use to install MIUI updates besides the usual OTA downloads. All of them involve manual installation and we have procedures for each one right below. Note that in most cases, Xiaomi provides all three files in distinct packages, so make sure you grab the right one depending on the method you want to use.

How to install Redmi Note 4 system update

Before you take down this route, Xiaomi has a few things you should note.

  1. Please wipe all data in Recovery mode if you want to update to a discontinuous ROM version, or downgrade to an older ROM version using MIUI full ROM pack.
  2. If you upgrade from MIUI Stable ROM based on Android M to MIUI Developer ROM based on Android N, please flash it via Fastboot update. Recovery update might cause upgrade failure.

With that out of the way, let’s get down to the steps on how to install MIUI ROM using system update method.

  • Download the latest MIUI recovery update from the table above
  • Connect your device to a Windows PC using a USB cable and transfer the ROM file downloaded (above) into the folder ‘downloaded_rom’ in the internal storage of your phone.
  • Launch ‘Updater’ app on your device and tap the ‘…’ icon at the top-right corner, select ‘Choose update package’, and choose the ROM file you’ve put in ‘downloaded_rom’ above.
  • After choosing the right ROM file, your device will begin upgrading. Your device should automatically boot to the new version when the update is completed.

How to install Redmi Note 4 Recovery update

Like the system update, there are a few things you also need to note before going the recovery update route.

  1. Please wipe all data in Recovery mode if you want to update to a discontinuous ROM version, or downgrade to an older ROM version using MIUI full ROM pack.
  2. Due to the differences in Recovery interface, this method is not applicable to devices with locked bootloader.

Now, onto the main steps of installing MIUI recovery update on your Xiaomi phone.

  • Download the latest MIUI ROM file from the table above and rename the downloaded ROM file to ‘update.zip’ on the computer.
  • Connect your device to the computer above using a USB cable and copy the ROM file downloaded and renamed in Step 1 above into the root directory of the internal storage of your device (Do not put it in any folder).
  • Enter the Recovery mode of your device. There are 2 methods to do it as follows:
Method 1: Launch ‘Updater’ app on your device, click the ‘…’ icon at the top-right corner, and select ‘Reboot to Recovery mode’ to enter.
Method 2: You can also turn off your device and then hold both Volume up button and Power button at the same time to enter Recovery mode.
  • In Recovery mode, you can use Volume up/down to scroll through the options and Power button to confirm your selection. After entering Recovery mode, choose the language you use, select ‘Install update.zip to System One’ and confirm. Your device will begin updating automatically. Wait until the update is completed, choose ‘Reboot to System One’, and then your device should boot to the new version.

How to install Redmi Note 4 Fastboot update

Before any attempts to install the MIUI fastboot update on your Redmi Note 4 handset, take note of the following:

  1. A Windows PC/laptop will be needed for this to work.
  2. Make sure that your device is fully charged or has enough power for this process.
  3. All user data will be purged in this process, so make sure you back up your data and think twice before proceeding.

With that out of the way, here’s how to install MIUI fastboot update on your Note 4

  • Download MIUI ROM Flashing Tool. If your device is locked, please click here to unlock it first. If your device is unlocked, please just follow the following tutorial to complete the ROM flashing.
  • Download the latest fastboot update ROM from the table above.
  • Turn off the device. Press the Volume down + Power buttons at the same time to enter Fastboot mode. Then connect the device to a Windows PC via a USB cable.
  • Open your phone’s storage and double click on the downloaded ROM file to decompress it. Open the file folder for the decompressed ROM pack, and copy its path on the computer.
  • Decompress the MIUI ROM flashing tool downloaded in Step 1, and double-click on it to install on your PC (if there is security warning, select ‘Run’). After installation is complete, open MiFlash.exe and paste into the address bar the ROM file folder path copied in the last step.
Click on the first button (circled out in yellow) to Refresh, and MiFlash should automatically recognize the device. Then click the second button to flash the ROM file to the device.
  • Wait until the progress bar inside MiFlash turns fully green, which means the ROM has been successfully installed. Then your device should automatically boot to the new version.

Note that if the flashing guide could not help you, please download Mi PC Suite here. After Mi PC Suite is installed, make sure that your phone is in fastboot mode, connect it to the PC in question and select the correct ROM file to flash.
