Xiaomi: Poco F1 Pie update coming soon; Issues with Android Auto, Asphalt 8 and 9 resolved, App lock to get face unlock soon

Poco F1

Xiaomi Poco F1, also known as Pocophone F1, has been on everyone’s lips since its launch in August 2018, at times for the bad reasons and sometimes for the good reasons. Like any other Xiaomi phone, the Poco F1 has been hailed for its massive raw power and great battery life combined with the affordable asking price, but all is not rosy in the Poco camp.

Some users of the Poco F1 have been experiencing various issues, luckily, these are software-related issues that Xiaomi has been taking note of through the user feedback program and is also working to fix them. Even better is that some of these issues have already been fixed, so it’s upon you to grab the latest software update to apply the fixes to your device.

Poco F1 Android 9 Pie update coming soon

At the launch event, Xiaomi promised to release the update to Android 9 Pie for Poco F1 this Q4 2018 and indeed, the company says the open beta will arrive in the coming few weeks, that is, before the end of November 2018.

Of course, this will be based on MIUI 10, which has already hit the stable channel on the Poco F1. That said, it’s likely that the stable version will arrive in early 2019, if not late 2018.

Android Q confirmed

To quash away any fears, a company representative confirmed that the Poco F1 will also be updated to Android Q. This will be the second, and perhaps final, major OS upgrade for the device.

Available and upcoming bug fixes

As noted earlier, Xiaomi collects feedback and works towards fixing the issues reported. As it stands, issues with time and weather overlapping on the notification tray have been fixed and so are those affecting players of Asphalt 8 and 9 with respect to Google Play compatibility. The Poco team has also fixed issues related to Android Auto, although an update will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Some players of PUBG Mobile have had issues since updating to the latest version, where the notch covered some of the content. Well, there is a fix for those in India, but the same will arrive soon for users of the Pocophone F1, that is, those outside the Asian subcontinent.

The issue where no notifications were displayed in the status bar has been fixed. You can even enable and disable this functionality via Settings > Notifications & Status bar > Show Icons for incoming notifications. If you can’t see the battery percentage in the status bar, a fix is already out, so make sure you update to the latest software and head to Settings > Notifications & Status bar > Battery indicator > Percentage.

Some apps are yet to be optimized to fully take advantage of the 18:9 aspect ratio, something Xiaomi says it is working to fix ASAP.

Of course, if you have been experiencing other issues that haven’t been addressed and you have actually submitted feedback on the same, the team is probably still working on them. One such high-profile issue is the inability to stream HD videos from Netflix, but the company says it is working together with Google and Qualcomm to bring a fix, although a beta version of the fix arrives this Q4 2018.

Another is the missing support for 4K video recording at 60fps, whose fix is coming soon. Xiaomi also says it has taken note of the erratic Google Assistant and keyboard issues when fast typing and is working on fixes that will be released very soon.

Following user suggestions, the POCO Launcher now supports the ability to customize the app icon size and desktop grid and in the near future, a dark mode will be added to the app drawer. All you need is to update the launcher to the latest version in the Google Play Store.

Also, suggestions such as allowing the full-screen mode with a hidden notch for some apps as well as adding face unlock in the app lock are being worked on with an aim of including them in a future software update.

With such features, there isn’t any definite time to expect their arrival. In fact, Xiaomi notes that the DEV team has just embarked on either developing or researching more about them so it will take some time. Still, it’s good to sit knowing that someone heard you and is working hard to address your concerns.
