Xiaomi Mi Mix and Mi Mix 2 Oreo update: Testers invited for beta, OTA rollout to take place later

Many a time, Chinese OEMs have been criticised for their lack of commitment to timely software updates and Xiaomi is high on the list. But looking at the company’s recent trend, you’ll agree that there’s a significant improvement when compared to earlier years.

Perhaps it’s the recent deal with Google concerning the Android One Xiaomi Mi A1 that has sparked this vast change. But whatever the reason, the company now wants Xiaomi Mi MIX and MIX 2 users to join in the MIUI Global Beta program for Android Oreo.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 Oreo update

Expected release date: Q2/Q3 2018

It was about such a time (January) last year that the original Xiaomi Mi MIX started getting the beta version of Android Nougat, which further highlights the improved commitment towards software updates from Xiaomi.

Make no mistake. It isn’t the first time Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 users are getting an invitation into the beta program of Android Oreo. The invite for the MIX 2 was first sent out a couple of weeks ago, but this one was targeting the Chinese market. Today, the company is looking for beta testers for the Global ROM, which means everyone across the globe is welcome to try. Of course, the beta program can’t accommodate all Mi MIX 2 users, which means the recruitment will close at some point. If you want in, better take your chance now, although the deadline is on January, 8th at 23:59 (Beijing Time). If selected, you’ll get notified on 11th.

Here’re the requirements, according to Xiaomi:

  1. Region: All Regions
  2. Communication Language: English
  3. Communication Tool: QQ (It is a must, no other alternative tool)
  4. Device: Mi MIX 2
  5. Other Requirements:
    • Must be using latest MIUI Global Developer ROM
    • Should have interest to test and some knowledge about ROMs
    • Must be active on forum
    • Willing to discuss with other members in both QQ Beta group and forum.

Once you’ve met the above requirements, you are good to go, but first, you’ll need to download and install the MIUI Global Forum app on your Mi MIX 2. The app is available in the Google Play Store, or you can just grab the APK version here. Launch the app on your phone, select “Recruitment”, fill out your info as required and Submit. If you’re approved, you’ll get a confirmation message in your inbox.

Note that this is not a stable version of Android Oreo. If you agree to the terms, it means you decide to use unstable software that might at times lead to unusual behaviors, for instance, apps crashing, excess battery drain and so on. On the brighter side, you’ll be the first to taste the new Oreo dessert on your Mi MIX 2 well ahead of others. If selected, though, the beta update should come your way 2-3 weeks from now.
