Xiaomi Mi 5 update: MIUI stable 9.6.1 for Mi 5 and Mi 5s now rolling out, MIUI 10 beta 8.7.12 hits all three variants

Xiaomi Mi 5s Lineage OS ROM

Xiaomi Mi 5 is not the newest of phones by the Chinese OEM, but it is still one of the popular offerings as it steered the company’s burst onto the scene in various markets outside China. In fact, the Mi 5 was so well received that the company threw in two several other variants of the phone (not unusual) that include the Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus and last year, a Mi 5X was added in the mix.

In this post, we have all the details you need to know about software updates pertaining all Xiaomi Mi 5 variants, be it details on Android Oreo, Android P, monthly security patches or the usual MIUI updates.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Oreo update

Expected release date: Released on July 10, 2018

The first Xiaomi Mi 5 handset was announced in 2016 and the last came out last year. While the 2016 family is comprised of high-end offerings, the 2017 variant is a midrange handset. Despite their differences, we expect all Xiaomi Mi 5 variants to receive Android Oreo. In fact, Xiaomi is already testing Oreo on the Mi 5 and is expected to commence the official rollout very soon.

Although the tests don’t involve the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus, the pair should also start receiving the update once the stable OS is made available to the OG Mi 5. As for the Mi 5X, it’s guaranteed an update to Android Oreo because it’ll be the first following its debut with Android Nougat. Also, the fact that Mi A1 is already enjoying Oreo yet the two share everything apart from software means that the 5X’s Oreo update is in the making.

Xiaomi Mi 5 is one of the devices that are guaranteed to receive the new MIUI 10 update. The company did confirm that the device will get the update by September 2018, but before then, you can grab the beta version on this page, which also has a guide on how to install MIUI 10 update on any [eligible] Xiaomi device.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Android P update

Status: Not expected

As noted, Xiaomi Mi 5, Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus came by in 2016. The trio was launched with Marshmallow out of the box and has since received an update to Nougat, with Oreo making it the second major OS upgrade. With this in mind, we don’t expect to see Android P coming to the Mi 5 handsets because, well, no Android device gets up to three major OS upgrades. Whether Project Treble will change this is still unknown, but we hope it does. Even so, this won’t change anything for Mi 5 owners.

Given that Android Oreo is the first major OS upgrade for Xiaomi Mi 5X owners, it’s likely that they are thinking about the prospects of Android P. If history is to be consulted, the fact that the Mi 5X is a midrange phone makes it less likely to receive a second major OS upgrade. This is despite the fact that the Mi 5X’s doppelganger is expected to get a second OS upgrade in Android P.

Xiaomi Mi 5 update timeline

Despite not being part of Xiaomi’s Android P plans, the Mi 5 family will keep receiving more updates in future based on the company’s MIUI skin. At the moment, all Mi 5 phones are running the latest MIUI 9 software, but we expect the company to launch the MIUI 10 very soon, probably alongside the Xiaomi Mi 8, and this is the version that is expected to bring Android P stable to compatible devices. All Xiaomi Mi 5 phones will receive this version, but we don’t when exactly this will happen.

To help us keep track of the updates, we have tables of every Xiaomi Mi 5 variant and all the details of the updates they’ve received over time, as shown below. For Mi 5X and Mi 5C update timeline, check here and here, respectively.

How to install Mi 5 update

There are different methods you can use to install MIUI updates besides the usual OTA downloads. All of them involve manual installation and we have procedures for each one right below. Note that in most cases, Xiaomi provides all three files in distinct packages, so make sure you grab the right one depending on the method you want to use.

How to install Xiaomi Mi 5 system update

Before you take down this route, Xiaomi has a few things you should note.

  1. Please wipe all data in Recovery mode if you want to update to a discontinuous ROM version, or downgrade to an older ROM version using MIUI full ROM pack.
  2. If you upgrade from MIUI Stable ROM based on Android M to MIUI Developer ROM based on Android N, please flash it via Fastboot update. Recovery update might cause upgrade failure.

With that out of the way, let’s get down to the steps on how to install MIUI ROM using system update method.

  • Download the latest MIUI ROM file from the table above
  • Connect your device to a Windows PC using a USB cable and transfer the ROM file downloaded (above) into the folder ‘downloaded_rom’ in the internal storage of your phone.
  • Launch ‘Updater’ app on your device and tap the ‘…’ icon at the top-right corner, select ‘Choose update package’, and choose the ROM file you’ve put in ‘downloaded_rom’ above.
  • After choosing the right ROM file, your device will begin upgrading. Your device should automatically boot to the new version when the update is completed.

How to install Xiaomi Mi 5 Recovery update

Like the system update, there are a few things you also need to note before going the recovery update route.

  1. Please wipe all data in Recovery mode if you want to update to a discontinuous ROM version, or downgrade to an older ROM version using MIUI full ROM pack.
  2. Due to the differences in Recovery interface, this method is not applicable to devices with locked bootloader.

Now, onto the main steps of installing MIUI recovery update on your Xiaomi phone.

  • Download the latest MIUI ROM file from the table above and rename the downloaded ROM file to ‘update.zip’ on the computer.
  • Connect your device to the computer above using a USB cable and copy the ROM file downloaded and renamed in Step 1 above into the root directory of the internal storage of your device (Do not put it in any folder).
  • Enter the Recovery mode of your device. There are 2 methods to do it as follows:
Method 1: Launch ‘Updater’ app on your device, click the ‘…’ icon at the top-right corner, and select ‘Reboot to Recovery mode’ to enter.
Method 2: You can also turn off your device and then hold both Volume up button and Power button at the same time to enter Recovery mode.
  • In Recovery mode, you can use Volume up/down to scroll through the options and Power button to confirm your selection. After entering Recovery mode, choose the language you use, select ‘Install update.zip to System One’ and confirm. Your device will begin updating automatically. Wait until the update is completed, choose ‘Reboot to System One’, and then your device should boot to the new version.

How to install Xiaomi Mi 5 Fastboot update

Before any attempts to install the MIUI fastboot update on your Xiaomi Mi 5 handset, take note of the following:

  1. A Windows PC/laptop will be needed for this to work.
  2. Make sure that your device is fully charged or has enough power for this process.
  3. All user data will be purged in this process, so make sure you back up your data and think twice before proceeding.

With that out of the way, here’s how to install MIUI fastboot update on your Mi 5.

  • Download MIUI ROM Flashing Tool. If your device is locked, please click here to unlock it first. If your device is unlocked, please just follow the following tutorial to complete the ROM flashing.
  • Download the latest fastboot update ROM from the table above.
  • Turn off the device. Press the Volume down + Power buttons at the same time to enter Fastboot mode. Then connect the device to a Windows PC via a USB cable.
  • Open your phone’s storage and double click on the downloaded ROM file to decompress it. Open the file folder for the decompressed ROM pack, and copy its path on the computer.
  • Decompress the MIUI ROM flashing tool downloaded in Step 1, and double-click on it to install on your PC (if there is security warning, select ‘Run’). After installation is complete, open MiFlash.exe and paste into the address bar the ROM file folder path copied in the last step.
Click on the first button (circled out in yellow) to Refresh, and MiFlash should automatically recognize the device. Then click the second button to flash the ROM file to the device.
  • Wait until the progress bar inside MiFlash turns fully green, which means the ROM has been successfully installed. Then your device should automatically boot to the new version.

Note that if the flashing guide could not help you, please download Mi PC Suite here. After Mi PC Suite is installed, make sure that your phone is in fastboot mode, connect it to the PC in question and select the correct ROM file to flash.
