In the age of Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, smartphone cameras are perhaps the most important thing for people buying this handheld mobile technology. Due to this trend, manufacturers have been upping their game in smartphone photography as they try to deliver what users want most – the best photos and videos for sharing on social media.
Over the recent past, we’ve seen dual-lens camera systems move from high-end phones and make their way to the bottom of the spectrum all because OEMs want to deliver the best photography regardless of the amount you pay. But of course, it’s not always about the number of camera lenses, but also about the kind of software optimizations on board.
This is exactly what Xiaomi is doing with the latest Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and Redmi 6 Pro by combining the best of both worlds – hardware (dual lenses) and software (AI-based optimizations) to deliver top-notch photography to buyers of these phones.

On paper, there isn’t such a significant difference between the Redmi 5A and Redmi 6A cameras. Still, the latter promises improved selfie shots thanks to the inclusion of a 5MP lens with AI portrait mode and plenty of other AI-based tweaks, but the main shooter remains at 13MP with support for PDAF.
When compared to the Redmi 5, the new Redmi 6 has lots of photography improvements. There’s a dual 12MP + 5MP shooter on the back and Xiaomi says the lens is large at 1.25µm pixels, allowing in more light needed for better photography in low-light conditions. Like the Redmi 6A, you are also getting AI portrait mode for adding bokeh effects to photos.

The selfie camera on the Redmi 6 also supports AI portrait mode and AI beautify, features aimed at getting the best out of the 5MP lens, but that’s not all. Xiaomi also says all three phones, including the Redmi 6 Pro whose camera system is the same as what’s found in the Redmi 6, come with electronic image stabilization (EIS) that ensures any movements or shaking doesn’t affect the quality of videos recorded on the phones.

Of course, we’ll have to take the three phones for a spin before we can give our full verdict on photography performance. But if what the outgoing Redmi 5A, Redmi 5 and even the Redmi 5 Plus can deliver is anything to go by, you can rest assured that the Redmi 6, Redmi 6A, and Redmi 6 Pro won’t disappoint in photography matters, especially when compared to other handsets in the same price range.
