Ever since Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S10+ with a staggering 12GB RAM, this memory module is now becoming a thing in handhelds, the latest of them Xiaomi’s gaming-focused smartphone, the Black Shark 2.

As the name suggests, this is the successor to the original Xiaomi Black Shark that came out in early 2018 and as you’d expect from a company that puts a lot of emphasis on hardware, the Xiaomi Black Shark 2 is a powerhouse of a gaming device.

Here are the specs:

  • 6.39-inch 19.5:9 FHD+ (1080×2340) AMOLED display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor
  • 6GB, 8GB or 12GB RAM
  • 128GB or 256GB storage
  • Dual 48MP + 13MP main camera
  • 20MP front camera
  • 4000mAh battery
  • Android 9 Pie
  • Extras: Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, Quick Charge 4.0 (27W) fast charging, in-display fingerprint scanner, pressure-sensitive display, etc.

On matters performance hardware, you can never go wrong with any Xiaomi device. The Black Shark 2 is as powerful as it gets, but despite being a gaming device, Xiaomi has included a few nifty features to keep up with the trends in the smartphone industry and generally spice up your gaming experience.

Some of these features include an in-display fingerprint scanner, the trending 48MP main camera, and super-fast 27W battery charging technology, but it is the pressure-sensitive Samsung-made AMOLED display screen that is making all the highlights at the moment.

With this tech, gamers will be able to trigger certain actions in a game when the screen is pressed harder, which is a pretty cool addition. This screen has also been optimized to reduce touch latency and screen flickering as well as improve color accuracy.

Being a gaming device, Xiaomi expects that the Black Shark 2 will mostly be in extensive use for hours. To keep it cool all the time, the company has gone the Razer Phone 2 way and included a Vapor cooling system. Like the original Black Shark, the 2019 edition also offers optional accessories for gaming.

Xiaomi Black Shark 2 has just been released in China. Pricing starts at CNY 3,200 (about $476) for the 6/128GB variant and goes all the way to CNY 4,200 (about $625) for the 12/256GB variant. The phone can be had in either of black or silver paint jobs, but for now, we still don’t know when global sales commence.
