How to View WiFi password on Android for Saved Networks

Ever been in a situation when you’ve saved a WiFi network to your device and then sometime after you try to add the same network on your other device OR a friend asks you to share the password, but unfortunately you don’t remember it.

This happens to most of us. And the first thing we try to retrieve the password is going to WiFi settings, but only to face a fail because Android doesn’t allow you to view WiFi password like your Windows PC does.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t view WiFi password on Android. Although not accessible by user, but Android does save WiFi passwords to a file called WPA_supplicant.conf located under /data/misc/wifi directory on your device.

However, you can’t access the /data directory being a normal user, you’ll need root access on the device for that. If you’re already rooted, then you’re good to go, otherwise find a rooting method for your device first to view saved WiFi passwords.

How to view WiFi Password on Android

Root access required

  1. Download and install a File Manager app with Root Access, we recommend the free ES File Explorer app.
  2. Enable Root access on ES File Explorer app from the slide-in left panel. And grant the app root permission when it asks.
  3. Go to /data/misc/wifi/ directory on your device.
  4. Open the wpa_supplicant.conf file and you’ll find your saved WiFi networks here with password for each.
  5. For your understanding, SSID here will be your Network name and PSK is the password for the associated SSID.

That’s all. Hope you find this page helpful.

Happy Androiding!

  11. Hi. This ia the third file explorer I have tried to use. I keep getting an error message when trying to turn the rooting on. I finally contacted Tech Expert and they said rooting cannot be done on my Galaxy S7 because it would void Sprint’s warantee. So how to I get the wifi password that I need without rooting the device?
