Canadian carrier Videotron to carry the Huawei P10 Lite, arrives June 7th

Chinese OEM Huawei is popular in its home country and in other places but wants to begin making a splash in North America despite the failure of the Huawei Nexus 6P to resonate with consumers. Huawei is working with AT&T to launch its handsets in the US, but the manufacturer also wants to make inroads with America’s northern brethren in Canada by bringing its smartphones to the country.

And Huawei’s goal has resonated with Canadian carrier Videotron, who has informed Canadian tech site MobileSyrup of its plans to sell the Huawei P10 Lite and its better-spec’d brother, the Huawei P10, on its network. The official Huawei P10 Lite Canada page went live less than 2 weeks ago.

Before we jump to the device this news is about, let’s first check what its standard version, the Huawei P10, gets us. The P10 has the better spec offering, naturally, featuring a  5.1-inch display with a 1920 x 1080p screen resolution and Corning’s strongest-to-date Gorilla Glass 5, 64-bit, octa-core Kirin 960 (Huawei’s in-house SoC), 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage.

The P10 also houses a 3,200mAh battery and works with all Canadian carriers (not just Videotron but also Rogers and Bell, among others). The device has arrived in Switzerland and Sri Lanka as of this month, a sign that Huawei wants its handset to go everywhere for everyone.

Now, the Huawei P10 Lite is aptly named — it brings a slightly wider screen than the P1o (5.2 inches vs. 5.1 inches) but lacks the Gorilla Glass 5 of the P10, trades in the Huawei Kirin 960 SoC for the Kirin 658, offers only 3GB of RAM instead of the P10’s 4GB of RAM, and houses a slightly smaller 3,000mAh battery as opposed to the 3,200mAh of the P10.

The Huawei P10 Lite will be available at Videotron starting Wednesday, June 7th.
