How to use GIF as a virtual background

Zoom and Microsoft Teams do not support GIF as your custom background during meetings and video calls but they do support video files in MP4 format. You can easily convert your selected GIF Zoom background to video using our simple guide at the link below.

â–º How to use GIF for Zoom background

We have included a few GIFs from ‘The Office’ above that you can try converting to video using this method. Zoom and Microsoft Teams automatically loop your video so you do not have to worry about your GIFs length at all.

Tip: In order to make the transition between your looping video a lot smoother, we advise you to attach a reversed clip of the same video at the end of your timeline before exporting it. This will make the first and last frame of your video identical to each other which will virtually hide the transition point for the loop in your background which in turn will ensure that your colleagues and meeting participants are not distracted by your background.

How to use a background on Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams does not natively allow you to add custom images as your background for virtual meetings and video calls. While the company had promised to add this feature in the initial rollout, it seems they need to tweak the system a bit more before this functionality is available to the masses.

Thankfully, there is a quick workaround that you can use to add your own custom backgrounds to Microsoft Teams. Follow our quick guide at the link for a guide on this.

  1. Do you have MP4 backgrounds working in MSFT Teams? I’ve tried and failed. They shows up as “broken” images when browsing the background images. When I use a GIF, it shows up (moving) in the background browser, but results in a still background instead of moving.

    1. Teams doesn’t officially support GIFs but they do work if you rename the file extension from GIF to JPG or PNG.

Then take a copy of the file and add _thumb to the end so you have two files like this:
      name.jpg
      name_thumb.jpg

Now copy them both into this location: %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds\Uploads

You’ll now see the background as an option in Teams and it will display as animated.

Worked for me on 14th June 2022 using Version 1.5.00.14473 (64-bit) of Teams.
