Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G is the cheapest 5G phone so far and is coming to Europe in May

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 smartphone

The Mi MIX series is one of Xiaomi’s most interesting products. The first-gen model revolutionized the smartphone design with ridiculously thin bezels while the third-gen, Xiaomi Mi MIX 3, brings back the nostalgia of slider phones. As if not enough, this same third-gen Mi MIX 3 now has a 5G variant, which has just been announced at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2019.

We knew this 5G variant of the Mi MIX 3 was coming and now it’s here. As expected, the phone is basically the same unit as the standard model but with a 5G modem, the Snapdragon X50. Somehow, Xiaomi also managed to squeeze a bigger 3800mAh battery in there compared to the 3000mAh unit found on the 4G model. Perhaps this battery increment is because 5G modems may need more power to get things going. It’s the same thing we saw with the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G variant in relation to the standard Galaxy S10+.

As for the rest, excluding the thickness, nothing changes from what came out late last year, as seen below.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G specs

  • 6.39-inch 19.5:9 FHD+ (1080×2340) Super AMOLED display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor
  • 6GB RAM
  • 64GB or 128GB non-expandable storage
  • Dual 12MP + 12MP main camera
  • Dual 24MP + 2MP front camera
  • 3800mAh battery
  • Android 9 Pie with MIUI 10
  • Extras: 5G connectivity, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, Rear-mounted FPS, NFC, Quick Charge 4+, 10W wireless charging, Corning Gorilla Glass 5, HDR, etc.

The Mi MIX 3 5G has more memory options that go all the way to 10GB RAM and 256GB storage, but from the look of things, not all of them will be sold globally.

Speaking of which, the Mi MIX 3 5G is coming to Europe in May priced at €599 and will be available in Blue and Black paint jobs. At the moment, UK pricing is still unknown, but based on the above figure, it could arrive priced at £520.

When compared to the asking prices of other 5G phones like Huawei Mate X and even Samsung Galaxy S10 5G or LG V50 ThinQ, the Mi MIX 3 5G is the most affordable 5G smartphone that money can buy so far.

Of course, we still haven’t seen what OnePlus has in store and it should indeed be exciting, especially after the company noted that pricing its OnePlus 5G phone above $1000 would make it too expensive.
