OnePlus 7 phones won’t be water-resistant as we know them

Statement on OnePlus 7 Pro water resistance

OnePlus is the undisputed king of budget premium phones. From the most recent OnePlus 6T all the way to the original OnePlus One, the company has excelled at selling phones packed with premium hardware at half the price of the competition from Samsung, Huawei, and so on.

To achieve this, OnePlus usually skimps on certain specs and features. Two of the modern-day features that OnePlus has always skipped in order to maintain affordable prices are wireless charging and IP6X rating for dust and water resistance.

Now, despite the rumored price hike for the upcoming OnePlus 7 Pro, it’s emerging that none of the two features will be available. While it’s understandable to miss out on wireless charging, not having IP6X rating could put a massive dent in the potential success of the OnePlus 7.

According to the Chinese vendor, testing a phone for IP rating is costly and by skipping the whole process, it should ensure a reasonable price for the devices. OnePlus instead tried testing how water resistant the phone can be by throwing it into a bucket of water.

If anything, the whole point of this exercise was to guarantee OnePlus 7 Pro buyers that their device is still protected against water despite not having an IP6X rating. However, the company goes on to warn users not to go around dipping their phones in a bucket of water just to try and recreate this test.

Here is the full OnePlus statement:

At OnePlus, we always aim to do the right things based on what you really need not the industry, especially when it comes to creating the best possible device. Over the past few years, we’ve seen so many comments from you on our phone’s water-resistance quality. In fact, we’ve never stopped improving our design and going through tests to make sure you can finally experience our water-resistant quality.

We know that an IP rating would be the simplest way to prove our phone’s capability, but the certification doesn’t help us communicate our focus on your real experience, which is why we created this direct and relatable video to show you what our water-resistant quality can actually bring to you in your real life in a more powerful way.

However, this is not a bucket challenge, and we certainly don’t want all of you to try to drop your OnePlus 7 Pro in a bucket. And just like other smartphone brands that do IP classify their devices, our warranty does not cover water damage.

This also doesn’t mean that we’ll never consider IP classifying our products in the future.
