Nvidia’s Shield tablet was one of the powerful Android devices released last year, and according to the latest reports, the company is planning to release its new variant on March 3. This model will be equipped with the company’s latest processor — Tegra X1 chipset which was one of the super announcements at CES 2015.
The GPU on the chip promises twice the performance than the predecessor (Tegra K1), which is based on the previous-generation Kepler architecture and offers improved graphics for better gaming. There’s no information on the exact specifications of the new tablet, though it’s reported to be an overall upgrade over its predecessor.
Nvidia is popular for its quick and on-time Android OS updates and stock Android OS experience. The new version is expected to retain the 8.0 inch screen size. The CPU in the chip is built around an octa-core 64-bit architecture with four high performing Cortex-A57 2MB L2 cores replacing the A15, and another four high efficient Cortex-A53 512 KB L2 cores. Another upgrade is in the graphics processor, which is up from 192 cores to 256 cores. The SOC supports all major graphics standard including Maxwell 256-core GPU, DX-12, Nvidia CUDA, open GL 4.5, OpenGL ES 3.1, and AEP support.
A Tegra X1 Nvidia tablet seems to be packed with heightened expectations from the company but we have to wait to lay our hands on one.
