Android 8.1 Oreo for Moto G5 Plus and Moto G5S enters soak test as release nears

The Motorola Moto G5S Plus came about as an incremental upgrade over the standard Moto G5 Plus unveiled in early 2017 and besides few hardware tweaks meant to set it apart, the G5S Plus also came preinstalled with a newer version of Android compared to its counterpart.

The Moto G5S Plus and its smaller counterpart, Moto G5S, came preinstalled with Android 7.1 Nougat and like its immediate predecessor, it was promised an upgrade to Android Oreo. Well, this is happening, at least in Motorola’s beloved market of Brazil, where users of the handset are reporting to have received an update that installs the newer Android 8.1 Oreo to the device. The update is also available for users of the standard Moto G5S too.

It’s not just those using the Moto G5S and its Plus counterpart that have reported about the update to Android 8.1 Oreo. In fact, a leaked email about the same indicates that Motorola is also addressing the Moto G5 Plus camp, as you can see in the screenshot below.

One thing worth noting is that this is a soak test, which means that only a section of those using the Moto G5 Plus, Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus will receive the download notification. Motorola will then monitor the performance of the OS on the first units to receive the update and if things go according to plan, a full release will follow suit sooner than later.

In short, we are looking at a possible release in the next couple or so weeks, but there’s no guarantee this will be the case. You know, you can never be 100% sure with software update timelines.
