Samsung has begun the mass production of the smartphone industry’s first 512GB flash chip in line with embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) 3.0 standard. According to Samsung, this new standard promises to be twice as fast as the outgoing UFS 2.1 standard with respect to read and write speeds.
Samsung aims to install the new flash chip in future phones like the bendable Galaxy Fold, promising read and write speeds akin to the many ultra-fast PCs out there. We are looking at speeds of up to 2,100MB per second and 410MB per second, respectively.
Even more interesting is that with eUFS 3.0, Samsung promises up to 20x faster read speeds compared to what you get on a typical microSD card. The company further notes that with this new specification, you will be sure of up to four times faster speeds compared to a SATA SSD.
To put this into perspective, you’ll need just three seconds to transfer a 3.7GB full HD (1080p) movie from a smartphone with the new UFS chip to a PC, which is simply insane.
Apparently, Samsung is not just focusing on the mass production of the 512GB storage option, rather, it will be accompanied by a 128GB version as well, with the 256GB and 1TB options to arrive later this year.
