How to Mount ISO from Android and Install Windows OS on PC using the DriveDroid app

Android is a world of possibilities, and with root access this just gets so much exciting. Drivedroid is one such sweet little app in that direction and makes you wonder what Smartphones can’t do these days.

With DriveDroid, you totally tell goodbye to all those live CDs, DVDs or USB pendrives you used to rescue your PC when things went wrong OR to simply boot your PC with different Linux distributions. DriveDroid let’s you boot any ISO image on your PC using your Android phone.

And while it let’s you boot ISO images, you could also use it install a Windows ISO image on your PC by mounting the ISO on your Android device and then boot the PC with it. Exciting stuff, right? Let’s show you the setup you need to go with:

  1. Download and Install DriveDroid (play link [icon name=”external-link” class=”” unprefixed_class=””]) on your Android device.
  2. Transfer a Windows ISO image to the following directory on your Android device
    /sdcard/Download/images/

└ If a directory by this name doesn’t exist on your phone then create one.

  3. Open DriveDroid app and follow the on-screen setup process. And make sure you grant it root access when it asks.
  4. Once setup is complete, the app will list all the .iso images inside /Download/images/ folder on the app’s main menu, select the Windows’ .iso image you transferred in Step 2 above.
  5. A host image pop-up will show up with either of the following options:
    1. Writable USB
    2. Read-only USB
    3. CD-ROM
  6. Select ‘Read-only USB’ option or ‘CD-ROM’ (if available), since our purpose is to only install Windows OS we don’t need a writable partition.
└ Do NOT disconnect your device from the PC yet.
  7. Your Windows ISO image should be mounted on the PC now as a new Drive via your phone.
  8. Now reboot your PC and go to UEFI/BIOS settings and change the boot order to the Drive where your Windows ISO is mounted.
  9. That’s all. Windows setup wizard will now boot and you can go on about installing Windows like you normally do.
└ Again, make sure you DON’T disconnect your device from the PC while the installation is going on.

So that’s how you install Windows on your PC by mounting the ISO image via your Android device. This DriveDroid is pretty cool, ain’t it?

  1. This was more helpful to me than the verbose (but very clear) instructions on the DriveDroid official page. Hit a snag with their instructions. Your instructions were far more straightforward and I had WinOS booted from my phone in under five minutes.

    Thanks for your efforts.
