Moto Z2 Force and Moto X4 first phones to include Neural Processing Engine from Qualcomm

In a new Press release by Qualcomm, the chipmaker praises the Motorola Moto Z2 Force and the Moto X4 to be the first smartphones to use the Neural Processing Engine for Artificial Intelligence tasks.

Motorola released both these devices earlier this earlier, and while other devices too have similar hardware, this is the first time Qualcomm has publicly talked about the NPE feature in its chipset. The platform is available in other chipsets from Qualcomm as well, but weren’t used in apps on a phone.

The Moto Z2 Force is a high-end smartphone that comes with the Snapdragon 835 processor and the Adreno 540 GPU, where as the Moto X4 is a mid range phone featuring the Snapdragon 630 and the Adreno 510. Both of these phones were released earlier this year and are very good buys.

So what does the NPE do? Well, it uses the GPU and an AI deep learning model to do a lot of cool things. The phones can recognize a landmark and provide additional information when you point the camera at it.

Something like this is already present in the new Google Pixel 2’s and Huawei’s latest smartphones. But they have their own chipsets that do this, meanwhile Motorola is using the Qualcomm made tech. The phones can detect over 1,200 landmarks across the world, and that number will only grow. This is a very useful feature for tourists who are discovering a new city.

Finally, other app developers can tap into the NPE and make their apps better. More features with AI will come up that will make things easier and faster for the consumers. Artificial Intelligence is the next big thing in the mobile industry.
