Samsung to exhibit 5.5-inch Flexible Display at CES 2013

We’ve been hearing about Samsung’s flexible displays off and on, but there has been no certainty so far on whether Samsung was just playing with proof of concepts or actually intending to produce these for use with mobile devices.

It turns out that Samsung Display is preparing to demo a 5.5-inch 1280 x 720 resolution flexible display at the CES which is scheduled to be held in January 2013. And knowing Samsung, we’re sure this won’t be the only surprise they have for us.

As you can see from the preview image above that our pals at Engadget got hold of, this is a component which may someday find its way into our day-to-day lives in the form of a smartphone or tablet display. But for now, it will be demoed as a component only. So don’t get your hopes up.

Samsung Display has also revealed that though these displays can bend without breaking, they are not exactly unbreakable. While this may set the Galaxy S4 rumor mills abuzz again, we seriously doubt if this tech will find its way to consumer devices so soon. Demoing a few pieces is one thing, but mass producing this tech for hugely popular devices which sell by the bucketfuls is going to be a different game altogether.

But then Samsung has ben known to surprise us, and if anyone knows how to balance supply and demand, especially for best-selling products like t heir Galaxy S series, or Note series, Samsung it is.
