[Update: It’s here] First Asus ZenFone Android Go phone could release soon

Asus X00RD Android Go phone

At the Mobile World Congress 2018, the first Android Go phones were announced, but Asus, which had widely been expected to unveil a Go-powered device at the event, did not get any representation. Instead, the company only launched the ZenFone 5, ZenFone 5Z and ZenFone 5 Lite.

Back then, a week or so before the MWC, a device with model number X00RD was spotted in benchmarks, prompting suggestions that this would be Asus’ first Android Go handset. Since then, the device hasn’t appeared online, but we now have another instance of the phone, this time thanks to the Wi-Fi Alliance.

While believing Geekbench benchmarks isn’t that easy, what we have from the Wi-Fi Alliance is quite easy to agree with. The same Asus device with model number X00RD has stopped by the platform, but the listing doesn’t give us anything new.

The fact that the WFA has cleared the device means that its launch is imminent. Despite the lack of specs or any other major details from the listing, the previous appearance on Geekbench gave us an idea of what to expect.

Apparently, the upcoming Asus Android Go phone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset paired with 1GB of RAM and of course, Android 8.1 Oreo (Go) will run the show out of the box.

Update [May 4, 2018]: Asus has launched its first Android Go-powered smartphone dubbed ZenFone Live L1. The phone will start selling in Indonesia on May 17, but the pricing has not yet been revealed.

As for the specs, most of what we had mentioned earlier remains intact but since we knew only a fraction of what Asus was lining up, here’s a complete rundown of the specs you get on the ZenFone Live L1.

  • 5.5-inch 18:9 HD+ display screen
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor
  • 1GB RAM and 16GB expandable storage (up to 2TB)
  • 13MP main camera and 5MP front camera
  • 3000mAh battery
  • Android 8.1 Go edition
  • Extras: Bluetooth 5.0, microUSB, 3.5mm audio jack, 4G LTE, Face Unlock, etc.

Although Asus hasn’t confirmed all the markets that will receive the ZenFone Live L1 handset, it’s most likely to sell across multiple markets globally. There’s word that it could be valued at about INR 7,500 or $110.
