Will iPhone 8 Get iOS 15? When Does Apple Support End?

Update, 21st September 2021: Apple’s iOS 15 update is now available for iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. You can use the guide below to get the latest iOS 15 on your device if you haven’t received it as an OTA update yet.

It is undeniable that not just Apple, but even Google gives OS updates as per the capabilities of their latest hardware-equipped smartphones. That’s been the norm since the beginning of the Smartphone era and it’s not likely to change in the near future. But the rest of us aren’t updating our phone models at the same yearly pace as the OS updates are arriving.

Sure, there are Apple fans and loyalists who are sincere about their Apple spending every year and even set an allocated budget aside for their iPhone spends, however, there are those who are still using the iPhone 8, holding on to it till its very last breath or at least till Apple officially cuts all ties with this particular model.

So here’s everything you need to know about whether iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus will get iOS 15 and when Apple’s support for the phone will end.

What iOS is currently compatible with the iPhone 8?

Last year, Apple ensured that iPhone 8 was one of the Apple devices that would receive the iOS 14 update. Currently, the iPhone 8 is definitely compatible with iOS 14 and the operating system works fairly well on the device.

There are some users who also preferred to keep the iOS 13 OS over the iOS 14 update so there are iPhone 8s out there that are running on the older version. Officially though, iPhone 8 currently runs on iOS 14.

Will iPhone 8 get iOS 15?

Yes, Apple has listed the iPhone 8 as one of the iPhones that will get iOS 15. There was much speculation regarding whether the iPhone 6, 6s, 6s Plus, and iPhone SE will make the cut this time. From the looks of it, it’s going to be at least one more update before all these models kick the bucket for good.

Even though the A9 Bionic chip processor may not be able to support a lot of the latest features, it will run the new OS in a way that the iPhone series 6 can easily handle.

Should you update the iPhone 8 with iOS 15?

Apple does a fantastic job when it comes to the iPhone’s general software. The machine learning and deep neural intelligence of the software compensate for the older iPhone model’s hardware inability to keep up with many operating system changes. While it’s unrealistic to expect the iPhone 8 to deliver a performance that will match the iPhone 12 series, the iPhone 8 manages to hold its own.

It’s fair to be apprehensive about the phone’s ability to handle an upgraded OS but we reckon that the iOS 15 will work smoothly, without any issues.

How to get iOS 15 for iPhone 8

The ideal thing to do is wait for the general release, which according to Apple’s announcement at the WWDC 2021 event, is expected around September 2021.

Apple will launch the latest iPhone models around this time and plans to simultaneously roll out the OS update for the older models. Here’s how you can get iOS 15 for iPhone 8 as part of the general release.

Go to the Settings menu on your iPhone and tap on General.

Now tap Software Update

Once the final iOS 15 is released, your iPhone will prompt you to download the software, tap the Download button when it appears. In case you use a passcode, then your iPhone will ask you to enter it. Type your passcode and the download will begin.

If, however, you want to get iOS 15 for your iPhone 8 before general release, then you need to sign up for the Public Beta Program. This program will give you access to all the iOS 15 features that are currently under testing. The program is expected to go live in July but we recommend enrolling as soon as possible.

When will support end for the iPhone 8?

There is no word regarding when support will end for the iPhone 8. So far, the oldest supported models that Apple was expected to remove from its update list were the iPhone 6 series and even they will get one last update. Apple generally provides support for a model for five years and on a rare occasion six years of support.

Since the iPhone 8 was released in 2017, it’s safe to assume that Apple will provide support for at least one more year if not two. Support for the iPhone 8 may end after 2022 so if you are an Apple user who wants access to the latest OS, be prepared to shell out money for the latest iPhone next year. If you’re really lucky, then the iPhone 8 may just survive one more year of OS updates.

That’s everything there is to know about iPhone 8 and whether it will get an iOS 15 update. We hope you found this article helpful. Do let us know in the comments in case you have any queries.
