Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium: Everything you need to know

Last year, Sony was at the Mobile World Congress to unveil the Xperia XZ Premium and it was widely expected that the Japanese tech giant will unveil the phone’s successor, Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, at the MWC 2018. However, we only got the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, two undoubtedly great phones, but then Sony took us by surprise when it unveiled the Xperia XZ2 Premium later on in April, a souped-up version of the Xperia XZ2 that somehow cast a shadow over what is a truly great piece of hardware.

Despite its April 2018 launch, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium hasn’t seen the light until today, where it has gone official in Taiwan.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium specs

  • 5.8-inch 4K (2160×3840) HDR display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor
  • 6GB RAM and 64GB storage, expandable up to 400GB
  • Dual 19MP + 12MP main camera
  • 13MP front camera
  • 3540mAh battery
  • Android 8.0 Oreo
  • Extras: Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, Quick Charge 3.0, Wireless Charging, Corning Gorilla Glass 5, IP65/68, Dual-SIM, Smart vibration feedback system, 960fps super slow-mo video recording, LTE, NFC, Fingerprint scanner, etc.

From a specs perspective, there’s no doubt that Sony nailed it as usual. The Xperia XZ2 Premium has all that you can think of when a flagship phone comes to mind. It is the first Sony phone to feature a dual-lens camera on the back and it’s not just any other setup, but it’s the company’s very own Motion Eye Dual camera system that pairs a standard shooter with a monochrome sensor that is able to deliver sharper photos and videos, including adding Bokeh effects to your shots.

Like its predecessor, the Xperia XZ2 Premium standout feature is right in front of your eyes – the 4K resolution display screen, but of course, there’s more to this handset than meets the eye. To find out everything there is about the XZ2 Premium, you’ll have to grab one for yourself; unfortunately, this is still a hurdle, at least for now.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium price and availability

As pointed out earlier, Sony launched the Xperia XZ2 Premium back in April and promised a summer 2018 release date. Well, summer is upon us and it’s no wonder the company has unveiled the phone in Taiwan, but then again, you won’t be able to buy it until the second half of July.

At the initial launch event, Sony did not mention anything to do with the Xperia XZ2 Premium price and the story wasn’t different in Taiwan. Still, we should get to know more about the pricing and availability of the phone in other markets in the coming weeks. However, don’t expect anything cheap, especially considering that the Xperia XZ2 was priced at $799 at launch.
