Samsung’s next-level GPU chip won’t make it to its next-level Galaxy S10 phone

At a time when the GPU war is intensifying, news just coming in suggest that Samsung has plans to launch what will be the first new GPU design in a decade.

In fact, Samsung claims the GPU is already delivering leading performance in simulations and given its architecture, analysts say we are looking at a chipset that could not only live inside smartphones but also in supercomputers.

Jon Peddie Research notes that “this is really a big deal” considering that “it’s the first new GPU design in 10 years” and comes at a time when Apple is also said to be working on a mobile GPU that could appear in the next-gen iPhones.

The man in charge of Samsung’s new GPU design is Chien-Ping Lu. He has previously worked at Nvidia, MediaTek and Intel, among others, and he brings rich experience to the table as far as GPUs are concerned.

Unless Samsung opts to license this technology, we might only get to see the new GPU inside the company’s own Exynos processors. It’ll be interesting to see how things unfold, especially since Samsung is at the heart of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets and 5G technology that is expected to go mainstream beginning next year.

Also, the fact that we only have a few months between now and the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S10 suggests that the new GPU won’t be ready in time for the next-level Galaxy S flagship phone.
