Samsung’s first Android Go phone, the Galaxy J2 Core, is now official

After doing plenty of rounds in the rumor mills, the first Android Go smartphone by Samsung, the Galaxy J2 Core, is finally among us. As you’d expect from any Go smartphone, there’s nothing in particular that will wow you about the J2 Core’s specs.

We are looking at a 5-inch TFT display screen with a resolution of just 540 x 960 pixels and under the hood, a process that has been around for quite some time, the Exynos 7570, runs the show alongside a mere 1GB of RAM. Given the device’s power-sipping infrastructure, the battery isn’t large either, but it should get things done, especially considering the target market for such a device.

Galaxy J2 Core specs
  • 5-inch 540 x 960p TFT display
  • Exynos 7570 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB expandable storage
  • 8MP main camera
  • 5MP front camera
  • 2600mAh battery
  • Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition)
  • Extras: Bluetooth 4.2, microUSB, 3.5mm audio jack, GPS, GLONASS, etc.

Samsung doesn’t mention whether this device supports LTE services, but it’s likely to be the case. This could be the reason you are getting an Ultra Data Saving feature that will help keep an eye on your data usage. The company also claims the 2600mAh battery will last a full day thanks to the Go-optimized apps, but with only 8GB of internal storage, it leaves one wondering what is it exactly that Samsung is hyping with “more storage capacity to enjoy your phone” line in the press release. But of course, we know the Go edition of Android is optimized for such low storage modules.

Samsung says the Galaxy J2 Core will start selling in India and Malaysia today, August 24th and will come to your local shop later on. Amazon India already has one priced at INR 7,690, which is quite hefty considering that the Xiaomi Redmi 5A is even cheaper at INR 6,999 yet it’s way more powerful, has a bigger battery, thrice the RAM, four times the storage and runs a full-blown Android OS.
