Samsung partners with Universal Pictures for HDR10+ content

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment (UPHE) and Samsung are joining hands to bring us more films mastered in the HDR10+ format. Yep, we’re looking at a number of titles that will render an “amplified vivid viewing experience for consumers”, according to Hyogun Lee, Executive VP of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung registered HDR10+ Technology LLC in 2017 along with Panasonic and 20th Century Fox. They are being called the HDR10+ alliance. It’s interesting that we still don’t have many HDR10+ titles to watch. However, Amazon Prime’s HDR catalog is now available in HDR10+.

Samsung has been pushing for content creators to adopt HDR10+ technology and has managed to get Amazon, Warner Brothers, and many others, on board. With the addition of UPHE to this roster, we can promise a sizable collection of movies and TV shows for HDR10+ compatible TVs and mobile devices. UPHE also plans to remaster some of their older titles in HDR10+ format.

HDR10+ technology promises to improve on the HDR10 standard by providing an extra layer of information for each frame. It basically analyses the variations in color, contrast, and brightness, in each frame, to enhance the quality of HDR playback. Samsung claims that this technology will “deliver brighter brights and deepest darks” in TV viewing experiences.

Now, all we have to do is wait for this monstrous library of movies in HDR10+. Get your TVs ready, people!
