Galaxy S8 Oreo update: Work on Android 8.0 continues

Samsung Galaxy S8 update

Update [September 29, 2017]: We’re yet to hear a word from Samsung on this, but reports have emerged claiming Samsung is now internally testing the S8’s Android 8.0 build. We can’t put a fair Oreo OTA release just yet, but we think if alpha build Samsung has with them run alright, they could open up registration for the beta testing of Galaxy S8 Oreo update, where interested users can apply, and chosen ones given a beta Oreo update via an OTA update later on, perhaps by October-end, or early November.

Original article: The Android 8.0 Oreo update should hit the Galaxy S8 before any other Samsung device out there, but that doesn’t mean you have got the update coming soon to the S8 near you. As of August 30, 2017, just know that preparing the Galaxy S8 Oreo update would take Samsung some time.

For now, even the Android 7.1.1 update for the Galaxy S8 is pending with Samsung, and users have been perplexed figuring out what’s taking so long for Samsung to come out with the minor incremental update.

For what it’s worth, we do expect the S8 7.1.1 OTA to start rolling out soon, as Samsung does have a 7.1.1 firmware ready with it, albeit for another device, Galaxy J3 2017 — it comes with 7.1.1 pre-installed, in case you were wondering.

Check out the article below to find out expected release date of the Android 7.1.1 (Nougat) and Android 8.0 (Oreo) update for the Galaxy S8, including all its variants, particularly those in USA: AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Come January 2018, we could expect the Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 becoming available for download as an OTA, or firmware, for the global unlocked variant of the device that comes as model no. G950F.

The USA variants, one at Sprint, Verizon, etc. carriers, carrying the model no. SM-G950U, should be seeing the update released sometime in February-March 2018. Same with the Canadian S8 sets.

While Korean S8 sets could equal or even beat the global variant to release, remaining units of the Galaxy S8 (including USA unlocked ones), should get their share of Android 8.0 update before the end of May 2018.

Ah 🙁 RIP my ideas of remapping the key to other functions

  • Vishal Giri

samsung shouldn’t hv disabled the remapping, it’s like they r forcing us to use their AI for no reason even if u want it or not!!

    • Rishab Warrier

Maybe they did this so that the users don’t miss out the features of Bixby when it rolls out

  • Saikat Kar

The S8 and S8 Plus have not been released anywhere as of now, it has only been launched. The update seemingly is only hitting the review units I think.

    • J Hood

      I’m holding it.

      • Saikat Kar

Awesome. How did you get it? 🙂

  • Denise Cham

Haven’t tried out Bixby yet but really hoped that there’s another way to remap the button 🙁

    • Ashwin Prasad

There is a way to remap it again. 🙂

  • Republicrat

Facial recognition not working after update!!

    • The S8 seems to be plagued with great no. of issues already! Very bad, Sammy!

      • Republicrat

Yeah, sounds that way. I’m loving everything else so far, though… Even the placement of the sensor works for me (left handed). Just gotta get facial recognition working again!

  • Sucks that there’s no way to remap that button :(( But if Samsung is really insisting on it then it much be pretty good

    • Ashwin Prasad

It can be remapped again now.
