Galaxy Note 8 Android 10 update, security updates, and more: September update available

Get all the news regarding the software update for the Galaxy Note 8 handsets here, for all the popular models including those in the US at T-Mobile, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, AT&T, and Verizon Wireless. Accordingly, the page is divided into sections, as per model no., each having a table listing the latest software version and its changelog (monthly security patches). We also discuss the Note 8’s eligibility for Android 10 and what are the alternatives.

Latest news

September 14, 2019: If you are using the Note 8 on AT&T, you have a new software update available for your device. Identified as build DSH1, the update began rolling out on Sep 10, according to AT&T. The N950USQS6DSH1 update brings August 2019 security patch for the device and is sized 214MB. Even the changelog doesn’t mention this, but the August update could be adding ‘Adaptive power saving‘ feature to the device, as noted by reddit users. Given Android 10 update won’t be released for the Note 8 handsets, monthly/quarterly security updates is all that Note 8 users can expect now.

Galaxy Note 8 adaptive power saving feature

September 09, 2019: The Global model of the Galaxy Note 8 is receiving the September 2019 security patch, coming in as version N950FXXS7DSHC. Nothing else is part of the update according to the changelog provided by Samsung.

September 09, 2019: After Verizon, now T-Mobile has begun rolling August security update for the Note 8. The update’s version remains same at N950USQU6DSH3 but T-Mobile says that camera improvements are also the part of the update.

August 28, 2019: Verizon Wireless has started rolling out an update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Carrying software version N950USQU6DSH3, the OTA brings the August 2019 security patch.

August 27, 2019: Samsung has started rolling out an update for the US Unlocked Galaxy Note 8. Carrying software version N950U1UES6DSH1, the OTA brings the August 2019 security patch.

August 9, 2019: Samsung has started rolling out an update for the Note 8 in France, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, and Italy. Carrying software version, N950FXXS7DSH1, the OTA updates the device’s security patch to August 1, 2019.

August 1, 2019: AT&T and T-Mobile Galaxy Note 8 devices are receiving the July security patch. The build number is N950USQS6DSG6 for both carriers.

Android 10 update

Will Note 8 get Android 10?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is an exceptional device in its own right. Despite being over two years old, the device is still considered to be one of the best Note-series smartphones ever, and the legacy is set to remain untarnished for a long, long time. Sadly, Samsung’s not too keen on giving its 2017 devices a taste of the latest Android, so, it’s safe to say that Note 10, too, will not be updated to Android 10.

Android 10 release date

Why Note 8 is not getting Android 10?

The Note 10 came with Android Nougat out of the box and has already received two Android OS upgrades (Oreo and Pie) since. Samsung usually limits its flagships to two major Android OS updates, and we don’t expect the company to break the pattern with Note 8.

Will Note 8 get One UI 2.0 update?

As the device isn’t getting updated to Android 10, Note 8 users won’t get the opportunity to experience the One UI 2.0. Samsung’s keeping One UI 2.0 reserved for only Android 10 devices and won’t be developing it for Pie.

Back in 2012, Samsung released Android 2.3.6-based TouchWiz 4 for the Galaxy S. It didn’t bundle Google’s latest OS that time in Android 4.0 ICS which it seeded out to Galaxy S2, but the fact that Samsung updated the UI for its former flagship is nothing short of commendable. Sadly, that won’t likely be the case in 2019, and devices like Note 8 would be stuck with outdated UI.

Galaxy Note 8 Android 10 ROMs

The Note 8 may not get the Android 10 update officially, but all hope isn’t certainly lost. Geniuses over at XDA Developers have a reputation for supporting outdated devices, and you’d be wise to keep tabs on the Note 8 development thread.

Even if an unofficial Android 10 comes out, it won’t probably be before Q1 of 2020. So, make sure to manage your expectations.

Users of the global variant of the Galaxy Note 8 (SM-N950F) can now download and install the stable Android 9 Pie update on their devices. The update is also available for download in the U.S. (SM-N950U, SM-N950U1) and Canada (SM-N950W).

September Update

  • Available only for the Global model (version N950FXXS7DSHC)
  • Not available for the Note 8 variants in the US (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, US Unlocked)

August Update

  • Available on all the models (Global, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and US unlocked)

July Update

  • Available on all the models (Global, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and US unlocked)

Night Mode update

Samsung won’t require additional hardware support to roll out the dedicated Night mode to the Galaxy Note 8. So, it’s safe to say that the company is making an informed decision of depriving the phone’s users of the highly-anticipated feature. With the Galaxy Note 10 just on the horizon, we don’t expect Samsung to go all out for a two-year-old device and only stick to periodic security updates.

Firmware download

Well, check out the model no. of your Galaxy Note 8 first, and then download the latest firmware available in the table above for your exact model no. Next, install the downloaded firmware using our Odin Samsung firmware installation guide here.
