Galaxy A9 Pie update news and more: Android 9 arrives on 2018 edition

Galaxy A9 software update

Latest news

March 13, 2019: Just as promised, Samsung has released the latest Android 9 Pie firmware for the Galaxy A9 2018. The device had been promised to receive Pie in March and earlier this month, Samsung Turkey made it more specific with a March 15 release date. Well, the firmware is available, meaning the official OTA rollout is about to begin, if it hasn’t already.

The update is arriving as version A920FXXU1BSC5 and besides Pie, you also get a new Android security patch for February 2019. The update has been spotted in Poland, but given that the A9 2018 only has one variant (model number) sold across multiple markets, it shouldn’t take long before other regions start seeing OTA download notifications.

Samsung Galaxy A9 family’s existence has been kinda spotty. After the Galaxy A9 Pro released in 2016, the wait took us to Q4 2019 for the launch of the Galaxy A9 2018, a revolutionary smartphone that happens to be the first in the world with a massive four camera lenses. You can read more about it here, but on this page, we have everything you need to know about the Galaxy A9 family’s software update news, be it minor monthly security updates or major Android OS upgrades.

The Galaxy A9 family costs of:

  • Galaxy A9
  • Galaxy A9 Pro
  • Galaxy A9 2018

Note that the omission of the Galaxy A9 Star and A9 Star Lite is deliberate because these two names are only familiar to residents of China. In other markets, the former is known as Galaxy A8 Star and the latter goes by the name Galaxy A6+.

Samsung One UI

Given that Samsung will be rolling out official Pie update to the Galaxy A9 2018, there is a small chance One UI could accompany the Pie update to this device. However, no official word is available at the moment for the device, but we won’t be surprised if it misses out on the One UI. Only time will tell.

Well, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it seems Samsung is not going to update the OG Galaxy A9 handset to Android Oreo. On the brighter side, the Oreo update is now available for those using the Galaxy A9 Pro as software version A910FXXU1CRIA.

There is an outside chance that the OG Galaxy A9 will receive Oreo update via a custom ROM, like LineageOS, but there is no guarantee of that happening. And even if the ROM becomes available, it might not be stable enough to be used as a daily driver.
