Root XXJVO Android Gingerbread ROM on Galaxy S i9000

This is the root hack for Galaxy S i9000 users who are using the Android 2.3.3 Firmware, XXJVO. those who want, can install XXJVO on their Galaxy S using this guide. Credits for this hack go to its developer, Chainfire, the same guy who brought us incredible root methods for earlier ROMs too.

But, Info and Warnings first!

[info]This guide is applicable only for Samsung’s Galaxy S international version (i9000). If yours is Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate/Epic 4G or any other Galaxy S variant, then this ROM — and Guide — is not for you, and that’s for definite.[/info] Warning: Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page. You only are responsible for your device. We wont be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

MAKE SURE YOUR GALAXY S IS RUNNING XXJVO FIRMWARE (Check this in settings – ‘about phone’)

Step by Step Guide to ROOT XXJVO:

  1. Download CF-Root kernel. File name – CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS.zipDownload Link. [Size – 6.70 MB]
  2. Unzip the above file. You will get a .tar file – “CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS.tar”. This file is what you are going to use to gain root access on your XXJVO firmware. We will be flashing this .tar file using ODIN to gain root access and install the ClockworkMod Recovery (as tweaked by Chainfire) alongside.
  3. Download Odin. File name – Odin3 v1.7. Download Link. Extract the zip file to get Odin3 1.7.exe. Run Odin now by double clicking on the extracted .exe file.
  4. Switch Off your phone. Wait for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
  5. Boot your phone in Download Mode — Press and hold “VolumeDOWN + HOME key + POWER button” together.
  6. Connect your phone to PC now. You’ll notice “Added! !” message in the Odin’s message box.
  7. On Odin, click the “PDA” box and select the .tar file you extracted in step 2 — CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS.tar
  8. Do NOT select any “.pit” file in the “PIT” box, and make sure “Repartition” button is NOT checked.
  9. Leave the “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” buttons checked.
  10. Double check Steps 7, 8 & 9.(Check the screenshot at the top, your Odin’ screen should look like this only, except for the file name).
  11. Click the Start button on Odin to begin installing the CF Root kernel.
  12. After the CF Root is installed, phone will restart.
  13. Your phone is rooted now. Note that surperuser app is there.

Video guide: Well, this is not exactly for the XXJVO users. This video guide was made to root XWJVB firmware but since the procedure remains ditto (except for the required file), you can check out this video to see it happening before actually trying it out yourself. The screenshot above has also been taken from JVB, but the applies to XXJVO as well. It’s useful if you’re not quite used with Odin.

ClockworkMod [CWM] Recovery:

To boot into ClockworkMod Recovery — power Off your phone completely and then, press and hold (till Galaxy S logo appears): VolumeUP+HOME+POWER. You’ll enter the CWM recovery. You can use this to:

  • Backup your ROMs
  • Restore backed up ROMs
  • Delete Backups
  • Flash update.zip files
  • Flash custom themes
  • Flash kernels (zImage, zImage in TAR, zImage in ZIP, zImage in TAR in ZIP)

CF-Root kernel was created by XDA dev Chainfire, you can visit his original post here. And if you feel like supporting him, use donate button below:

  1. no extract is a zimage

  2. how to extract is a zimage?

    1. DO NOT extract .tar file which you get upon extracting the downloaded .zip file. You need to put .tar into Odin’s PDA tab — plz read the instructions a bit more carefully. I hope it helps!!!!

    2. If the problem is caused by the extract software you’e using, use this great free software, IZArc — http://www.izarc.org/download.html. That’s what I’m using here.

    7. Of course, it worked fine for me. BTW, there is a video that shows rooting a

BTW, new firmware — based on Android 2.3.4 — has leaked out, called XXJVQ.

          useful to us.

          1. i know but somehow it just doesnt work for me. does it work for you?

          2. Of course, it worked fine for me. BTW, there is a video that shows rooting a
different firmware — JVB. The procedures are same, so watch that video in
full, this may point out sth you’ve been missing. Be assured that the root
works quite well, it’s just some minor hiccup that’s preventing you.

BTW, new firmware — based on Android 2.3.4 — has leaked out, called XXJVQ.
It’s pretty cool, you can try that too. link here –
            http://nerdschalk.com/new-android-2-3-4-firmware-for-galaxy-s-i9000-xxjvq-installation-guide/

And it’s got root too (although the procedures are same) –
            http://nerdschalk.com/root-xxjvq-android-2-3-4-firmware-for-galaxy-s-i9000-installation-guide/

Hope this helps you. [Do watch that video so that you’ve no doubts
            whatsoever.]

          3. Thanks, it finally worked. I just ‘forgot’ to extract the zip-file…:-)

  28. Worked nice and neat.. thank you for your exhaustive, newbie-proof explanation, and of course, thanx Chainfire <3

  31. Hi there! great tutorial although i have a problem. when i extract the .zip file im left with another.zip file and when i extracty that im left with a ‘zimage’ file. what am i doning wrong? 🙂

    1. Well, you don’t have to extract the file you get after first extraction.

  32. hi again, ok im sure i used the CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS.zip and that fits my phone. i just restarted it and this happen? is there a way to reset it using odin?

    1. ohh yes and my version was GINGERBREAD 2.3.3 XXJVO .

    2. Oh I thought you got it solved. Anyway, your firmware needed to be XXJVO to
be compatible with this root. Anyway, yes, you can reset it using Odin but
if you remember your firmware that you had before rooting, maybe I can help
you solve this problem without deleting the data.

And in case you’re okay with deletion of all data and apps and have
appropriate backup, you may install a new firmware.

    4. ok tbh i dont care about anything on the phone. ill be honest its not long back from samsung. if theres a way to just reset it so its just how it was when its new. im sure that the version was 2.3.3 and XXJVO 100% sure.

    5. In that case, install the latest Android 2.3.4 firmware XXJVQ –
      http://nerdschalk.com/new-android-2-3-4-firmware-for-galaxy-s-i9000-xxjvq-installation-guide/

And root it from here –
      http://nerdschalk.com/root-xxjvq-android-2-3-4-firmware-for-galaxy-s-i9000-installation-guide/

I’m also using the rooted XXJVQ and it’s quite good. BTW, it’s always nice
to have a backup (use titanium backup on rooted phones so that app’s data is
also backed up). Don’t worry even a little bit, the above links will get
your phone working back alright, and you’ll be upgraded to Android 2.3.4
      too.

  38. this ultimately worked for me, nice simple instructions.

my first attempt failed and i was worried the phone was bricked.  Odin displayed a red FAIL! on the screen and i saw the phone/pc exclamation mark image on the ‘phone.  this was on a laptop running windows server 2008.  i noticed some hardware faults on the laptop despite a fresh installation of kies, particularly around a missing “gadget serial” driver.

after a good nights sleep, i repeated on a windows xp laptop (it’s 2011 and we still need one around!).  a fresh install of Kies for its drivers and everything worked.

moral?  dont use windows server 2008 to do this!
