Restore Epic 4G Touch Back to Stock Rom with Root!!

The beauty of Android lies not only in the possibilities of customization it offers to a user, but also in the options that it presents in restoring a customized device, for whatever reason, back to its original factory or “stock” state. What this means is that if one is adventurous and curios enough to do some research on the world wide web, and is keen on utilizing the capabilities of his or her device to the fullest, one can try out an enormous number of tweaks, modifications to the OS, flash custom ROMs, kernels, etc; thanks to an ever enthusiastic developer community–and if things go wrong, one can restore the device (more often than not) back to its stock state.

What we have here today is a restoration package for the Samsung Epic 4G Touch, brought to us by XDA member sfhub. The package includes Odin ( Tool used to flash ROMs on Samsung devices), the Stock EL29 Modem, Kernel and the ROM, to restore the Epic 4GT back to a stock ROM, and–it includes Root!! So basically, after flashing this package, what you get is a rooted, stock ROM.

Warning: The steps and methods included in this guide are considered risky. Please do not attempt to try this unless you know exactly what you are doing, as it may render your device unusable, and your pocket lighter by the amount it takes to replace it. You have been forewarned!!!

Pre-Installation Requirements:

  • Battery charge of at least 50%
  • All your data backed up
  • All the appropriate drivers for your device installed. You can download them HERE

There are two versions provided, a FULL Restore that resets your whole phone, similar to a factory restore, and a No Data Restore, which is the same, except it preserves your User Data.

Installation Steps Quoted from the developer’s thread

  1. Backup anything important and Disable any PINs
  • To be safe, it is best to archive your backup off your phone, i.e. on your PC or drop box.
Note #1: Please DISABLE any PIN code you may have created to protect your phone. As a security measure, after the flash, Android will ask you for your PIN, if you have one enabled. It is simpler to have no PIN active. If you forgot your PIN then, after the factory restore, just enter the wrong PIN a few times and it will warn you. Enter the wrong PIN again and it will reset the file system.
  1. This process will restore you to factory software. All your Android data will be reset.
  2. Install Samsung USB/Android drivers (Link provided above)
  3. Download the EL29 full restore One-Click self-extractor ( Links provided above)
  4. Extract the package & Double-click on the self-extractor file, specify the directory to extract to (instructions assume C : )
  5. Start ODIN One-Click (This should auto-select the files needed for the flash, so that you do not have to fret over what files to select and which boxes to check 🙂 )
  6. Navigate to C:Odin-OC ( Or whichever path you extracted the package to)
    • Reset User Data Version : Double-click on SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-OneClick.exe
    • Preserve User Data Version : Double-click on SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED_NODATA-OneClick.exe
  7. Place phone in ODIN download mode.
    • Power down phone
    • Wait for capacitive button lights to turn off
    • Simultaneously Press and Hold [Power] [VolDn] until confirmation screen appears
    • Press [VolUp] to enter Download modeStart ODIN flash process
  8. Press [Start], And wait for Odin to do its thing.
  9. Complete – PASS!
  • When complete you should see a screen similar to what is shown at top of post
  • Phone will automatically reboot
  • Status should change to green PASS!

Boot process will be slightly longer than usual during which time you’ll see the 4G logo screen.

For NoData install ( Preserve User Data Version)
– If you are getting random force closes, wipe cache/dalvik-cache
– If you have troubles with Android Market, clear data from
menu->applications->manage applications->all->market->clear data

You can follow updates and user experience with this package in the original development thread. If you have any questions before, while or after using this, do not hesitate to ask us in comments below, and we would be glad to help you out.

  5. I was previously using CM9 ROM with an FF02 kernel. I flashed this recovery using Odin OC, and now the phone doesn’t make it past the splash screen. What went wrong?
