Reports that Samsung may do away with Galaxy J series in 2019 pop up again

Samsung’s most popular series, the Galaxy J, will disappear beginning 2019. This is according to Chinese tipster Ice Universe, who claims the J family will be replaced by several new alphabet series as part of the Korean company’s new smartphone strategy.

This is not the first time such reports are showing up online. Back in July 2018, it was also claimed that Samsung has plans to ditch the Galaxy J series beginning in 2019, but at the time, there was no mention of what would come in its place.

Lately, there have been talks of certain Galaxy P and Galaxy R series of devices from Samsung. Whether these are part of the new alphabets that Samsung will allegedly adopt is still unknown, but to us, it comes as a surprise that Sammy would want to do away with its best-performing family of devices in developing markets.

In the period ending July 2017, for instance, Samsung’s Galaxy J series had a total market share of 33% in India, up from 28.4% the year before. This shows how popular the J series of devices is not only compared to other Samsung phones but also the rest of the smartphone market in one of the biggest markets.

Whether this new strategy is why we haven’t seen the likes of Samsung Galaxy J3 2018, Galaxy J5 2018 or Galaxy J7 2018 so far is still unknown. But it’s even further confusing considering that Samsung has just introduced new devices in the J series, among the Galaxy J4, Galaxy J6, and Galaxy J8.

It’s strange that the company would want to do away with its best performer in developing countries, but then again, these are just rumors that we should take with a grain of salt. Still, it will be interesting to see how Samsung plans to take on the likes of Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, HMD Global (Nokia), Huawei Honor, and so on – all of which have some really good devices that are already giving the current-generation J series a run for their money.
