Nearly every year, we get the luxury of seeing at least one new name in the smartphone market. In 2017, Razer joined the party by launching the Razer Phone, the first smartphone to feature a 120Hz display screen optimized for gaming.
Apparently, the gaming company has plans underway to unveil the successor to the Razer Phone somewhere in September 2018, probably to be called the Razer Phone 2. This alleged release date easily points to the IFA 2018, an annual event held in Berlin, Germany, but since this is an unconfirmed report, you might want to take it with a grain of salt.
Other than unveiling the new Razer Phone 2, the company will reportedly launch the Project Linda laptop that was showcased at the CES 2018. At the moment, we cannot determine whether the 2nd-gen Razer Phone will draw some inspiration from Project Linda, but we are keeping our fingers crossed.
In January 2018, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan hinted on Twitter that Project Linda could indeed be a thing in the near future, but details about the prospects of Razer Phone 2 remain unclear. If Razer truly plans to unveil the said laptop, it’s likely that it will be accompanied by a new Razer Phone 2.
This is because, with Project Linda, the company aims to turn Android phones into laptops, where Linda will be using the Razer Phone as its brain and touchpad. The phone can be docked into the laptop to create a hybrid environment that offers superior gaming and better productivity.
At the moment, details about the Razer Phone 2 remain unclear, however, you can expect more than what the current model offers. The OG Razer Phone comes with a Snapdragon 835 SoC, 8GB RAM, a 5.7-inch QHD display, a huge 4000mAh battery, and Dolby Atmos stereo speakers with THX-certified amplifiers, among others.
Update [August 9, 2018]: At the ChinaJoy 2018 event held in Shanghai China, Razer Global VP Chen Xiaoping said that the company will launch a new Razer Phone 2 in China before the close of the year. In addition, Chen also revealed that the alleged Razer Phone 2 will ship with the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, implying that we could see a Snapdragon 845-powered phone from the company.
There are reports that Qualcomm could launch the SDM845 successor before this year comes to a conclusion, which could mean the Razer Phone 2 may launch with a Snapdragon 855 chipset.
