Pixel 2 root and TWRP recovery: Alpha build now available for download

Update [November 01, 2017]: Early alpha builds of TWRP recovery is now officially available for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. You can download them over here. These builds do not support decrypt yet, and aren’t fully tested. As of now, we do not recommend you to flash these over to your Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL, and definitely NOT try root by flashing either SuperSU or Magisk zip using the alpha build. Let’s just give the folks behind the development of alpha release of the recovery some more time to test and fix bugs before trying it out on your devices. Stay tuned..

Google’s latest Pixel smartphones, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are already in the hands of many customers. And despite some issues with the display, people are loving their new Pixel 2 devices.

Now, Google has announced that the Pixel 2 warranty won’t void if you root it. This is pretty good news, specially for those who just can’t use their Android devices without root access. Also, it has been fairly easier thus far to root a Google device. The original Pixel phone was a bit tricky to get rooted since it was the first device to use A/B partitioning system, but root scripts such as SuperSU now fully supports the new partitioning system, hence it should be easier to root Pixel 2 as well once TWRP recovery is available.

To achieve root and install TWRP recovery on Pixel 2, you will first need to unlock the bootloader on your Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The process for unlocking bootloader on Pixel 2 is similar to that of the original Pixel. However, note that unlocking the bootloader will completely wipe your device’s data.

As of now, TeamWin, the folks behind TWRP recovery haven’t officially released the recovery for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. There is not even an unofficial build of TWRP available yet for the Pixel 2, but it shouldn’t take long. Once TWRP is available for Pixel 2 (even unofficially), it should be easier to root the device by just flashing SuperSU zip via TWRP recovery.

We’ll be sure to update this post once TWRP recovery and root is available for the Pixel 2. Stay tuned..
