Pixel 2 XL mic problems fixed with Android 8.1 DP2 update

Just earlier today, Google released the second developer preview of Android 8.1 to developers. The new DP2 enabled the Pixel Visual Core SoC present inside the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. It also included other features, bug fixes, and improvements. One of them, it seems, is a fix for the Pixel 2 XL microphone issue during video recording.

A lot of Pixel 2 XL users were facing issues while recording videos. The audio was terrible and it seemed there was something wrong with the microphone. Turns out, there wasn’t anything wrong with the mic, but the problem was that the phone was using the wrong microphone to do the recording.

The Pixel 2 XL, prior to this, was using the mic located at the bottom of the device that’s used for voice calls. Now, after the update, the phone uses the correct microphone, which is located at the top of the device. This drastically improves the audio quality when recording videos.

We’re not sure how Google managed to make this blunder in the first place. This is not the only issue that has plagued the Pixel 2 since launch though. The latest flagship from Google has gone through a lot, including screen problems, clicking sound, high pitched noise, and others.

The Android 8.1 update will be available for regular users in December. It is also possible that Google might include this fix in a security update, most likely with the next December security patch.
