OnePlus Pie update: Stable release available for OnePlus 5 and 5T

OnePlus Android 9 Pie update

Update [December 26, 2018]: OnePlus has released the stable Android Pie update for the OnePlus 5 and 5T. The update arrives as software version OxygenOS 9.0.0 and brings the new Gaming Mode 3.0, improved DND mode, and other cool Android Pie features like App Actions, Adaptive Battery, Adaptive Brightness, Digital Wellbeing, etc. to the company’s 2017 flagships.

The company has already released the OnePlus 6 Android Pie update back in September and was one of the super fastest to roll out the update among other OEMs.

FYI, Samsung began updating the Galaxy S9 to Android Pie (in Europe only, no less) only yesterday, while Asus is yet to release Android Pie for its ZenFone 5Z (it did release Pie update for the ZenFone 5 a few days ago). So, there you have it, OnePlus is the best when it comes to software updates outside of Android’s parent company, Google itself.

Update [Dec 12]: The OxygenOS 9.0 update based on Android 9 Pie is now available as beta for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T handsets globally (it was restricted to China only earlier). Coming in as Open Beta 22 for the OnePlus 5 and Open Beta 20 for the OnePlus 5T, the update is also available for download already. Get the OTA update from here for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T.

[Original post]: OnePlus came to the smartphone fold in 2014 and four years later, the Chinese OEM is one of the go-to smartphone vendors when software support is a top priority.

Apart from the unlucky OnePlus 2 that for some reason never got the deserved update to Android Nougat, OnePlus has been doing a great job as far as software updates are concerned, be it minor, monthly security patches or even major Android OS upgrades.

The fact that OnePlus only has a handful of smartphones on the market also makes it light work for the company to work on software updates for all of them, despite their size. But of course, if OnePlus 2 never got past Marshmallow, don’t expect it anywhere close to the official OnePlus Pie update.

Still, the device should continue receiving love from the developer community, probably even post Pie. You can check out more on the unofficial Android 9 update in the last section of this post.
