OnePlus 2 Android 6.0 Marshmallow update release set for Q1 2016

You’d think that because OnePlus doesn’t customize their devices a lot — at least not with a custom skin like Samsung’s TouchWiz, LG’s UI, or HTC’s Sense — the company would be damn quick with OnePlus 2 Marshmallow update, like Motorola, which updated its Moto X2 and Moto X3 Style to Marshmallow few days ago.

But that’s not the case, sadly. And we’ve seen this first hand on OnePlus One which received the Lollipop update only after a huge delay.

OnePlus 2 Marshmallow Update release

Now, OnePlus 2 stands on same late-update schedule, as the company just confirmed that the Marshmallow update for the device is scheduled for Q1 next year.

Now, Q1 2016 release for OnePlus 2 Android 6.0 update basically means March 2016. Not January, or February 2016, actually. Otherwise, official statement would have read early 2016, in which we would be right to be hopeful of January end to Feb-mid release. But that’s not the case, so it looks like March release, most probably March-end.

The OnePlus 2 Marshmallow update will also include stock fingerprint sensor API, and not company’s own code. After all, this is why Google added the required APIs for fingerprint sensor, to make life easy for OEMs, and reduce redundant work on this.

OnePlus 2 Marshmallow Update: the delay

The Q1 2016 release isn’t anywhere close, but such delay is sort-of understandable, if not exactly anywhere near to what we would want.

We could only pray that OnePlus team doesn’t misses the expected date. Although, early 2016 is when OnePlus 2 Marshmallow update should be released, last to last, to keep users happy with OnePlus’s software update scenario.

Admittedly, there’s lot OnePlus could learn from Motorola, who also keep their android devices as pure as possible, with minimal customization done with addition of certain nifty features. Which is why company is able to update its 2014 and 2015 flagship devices this early.

For now, OnePlus 2 users can only wait for Q1 2016, which as said above, could be March 2016. And hope that the team at OnePlus is able to hold on its promise.

OnePlus 2 Marshmallow Update: Unofficial means

Though, because we have OnePlus 2 root and TWRP recovery, we’re hopeful of OnePlus 2 CM13 — like OnePlus One CM13 — or other Marshmallow based custom ROMs to appear soon, so that we don’t have to wait for March ’16 to taste Android 6.0 update.

We’ve seen unofficial Marshmallow updates for devices like Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3, for whom support as long been dropped by its OEM, and it’s not bad option.

At the moment, devices that have received the Marshmallow OTA update include Nexus devices, Android One devices, LG G4 and Moto X 2nd Gen and Moto X Style 3rd Gen.
