Nokia X6: All you need to know

Nokia X6

After doing numerous rounds online unofficially, the Nokia X6 is finally out in the public on an official notice. HMD Global held an event in China on May 16 to unveil the latest Android One device and on this page, you’ll find everything you need to know about the new kid on the block.

The Nokia X6 has a couple or so firsts and while it might to some extent represent what we should expect from HMD in the coming future, it also looks like the Finnish company is testing the waters with this device.

Nokia X6 specs

From a specs point of view, the Nokia X6 is a midrange smartphone that easily fits between the Nokia 6 2018 and Nokia 7 Plus. As for the design, the X6 is the first from HMD to rock the infamous notched display screen and it also beats the Nokia 7 Plus’ aspect ratio of 18:9 by jumping to 19:9 aspect ratio, but the resolution stays at full HD+.

Here’re the specs:

  Nokia X6
Display 5.8-inch, 19:9 full HD+ (1080 x 2280 pixels), Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection
Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 636
RAM 4GB/6GB
Storage 32GB/64GB, microSD card support
Cameras Rear: 16MP + 5MP, HDR, Bothies, AI

Front: 16MP

Battery 3060mAh, Quick Charge 3.0

USB Type-C

Software Android 8.1 Oreo
Dimensions & weight 147.2 x 70.98 x 7.99 mm, 151g
Colors Black, Dark Blue, Silver
Extras Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.0, 4G VoLTE, 3.5mm audio jack

From the specs, the Nokia X6 is without a doubt an impressive piece of hardware. It’s one of the few devices that are powered by the new Snapdragon 636 chipset and besides hoping onto the notch bandwagon, the X6 also represents the company’s jump into the AI world.

The dual-lens camera on the back supports Bothie mode, which is a feature we should get used to seeing on future Nokia phones, but that’s not all. HMD says the Nokia X6 ships with automatic AI image enhancements that include facial recognition and color balance adjustments.

Despite giving the Nokia X6 the latest USB-C port, HMD kept the much-loved 3.5mm audio jack intact, which is a good thing.

Nokia X6 price and availability

Nokia’s return to the smartphone industry has been well received not only because of the company’s fame but also due to the aggressive pricing of its well-built phones. The Nokia X6 follows the same line, where the base model of 4GB RAM and 32GB storage goes for CNY 1,299 (approximately $200) while the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant will set you back CNY 1,499 (about $235).

If you want to get the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant, you only need CNY 1,699, which translates to about $265. This is hardly beatable in any market out there, especially since HMD is riding on the back of Google’s Android One program that promises at least three years of regular software updates and two major OS upgrades.

At this moment, the Nokia X6 is up for pre-order in China, but HMD has kept quiet on its availability in other markets across the globe. Given that the Finnish company has used China as its testing ground before (Nokia 6 first launched in China before going global while Nokia 7, a China exclusive, gave birth to the Nokia 7 Plus that now sells globally), the X6’s global availability seems to be pegged on how good or bad the phone performs in this market. Only time will tell!

Should you wait for the Nokia X6?

Now that we know about the specs, features, and pricing of the Nokia X6, the question that must be lingering in your head is whether to wait on HMD’s decision on which other markets to sell the phone.

Well, as noted, only time will reveal this to us. Still, if you are the optimistic type, we have some reasons to give you more hope of waiting for the X6’s global launch:

  • Compact build (big screen in a small body)
  • The power of Android One
  • A 19:9 aspect ratio
  • Great value for money
  • It’s Nokia, you know
  • The notch (if you are a fan)
