HMD Global is in the second year of doing business with Nokia as far as Android phones are concerned. So far, the company has refreshed a good number of its debut releases, but as we all know, the attention has been all in the budget and midrange categories.
Following the recent launch of the Nokia X7 in China – a phone that is expected to come to the rest of the world as the Nokia 7.1 Plus – details of what is the phones superior and a successor to the Nokia 8, the Nokia 8.1, have emerged online thanks to benchmarking website Geekbench. With all the flagship glory of the Nokia 8, your expectations about the Nokia 8.1 might be dealt a blow, at least if some of the leaked specs are anything to go by.

Nokia 8.1 specs
- Unknown display size and resolution
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor
- 4GB of RAM
- Unknown storage amount
- Unknown camera configuration
- Unknown battery capacity
- Android 9 Pie OS
- Extras: Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, Rear-mounted FPS, Face unlock, Quick Charge fast charging, etc.
It appears that the Nokia 8.1 will be positioned as a premium midrange smartphone, just a class above the Nokia 7.1 Plus that shares the same Snapdragon 710 processor and 4GB RAM and will soon be upgraded to Android 9 Pie. Although a Snapdragon 710 processor is likely to achieve nearly the same real-world performance as the Snapdragon 835 used in the Nokia 8, we all know flagship Android phones have the Snapdragon 800 series. For the Nokia 8.1 to be considered a flagship phone that is here to succeed the Nokia 8, a Snapdragon 845 chipset would have done the trick, but it seems this isn’t the case.

To that effect, there were claims that the Nokia 8.1 could end up as the global variant of the Nokia X7, but its unlikely to be the case if HMD Global’s recent naming scheme for its devices Chinese and global variants is anything to go by.
Sorry, more correct and up-to-date information about 7.1 plus. The announcement will not take place before MWC.
Also, initially Nokia X7 was supposed to get the name Nokia 7.1 plus, but then Juho decided to give another name – Nokia 8.1.

For instance, the Nokia X5 (China) is known as Nokia 5.1 Plus to the rest of the world while the Nokia X6 is the Nokia 6.1 Plus to the world. Granted, it makes sense to assume that the Nokia X7 will be released globally as the Nokia 7.1 Plus and not Nokia 8.1. Only time will tell!
Nokia 8.1 release date and availability
We still don’t have a specific release date for the Nokia 8.1, but if the latest developments are anything to go by, the device is approaching its launch date. The device has already earned a place on Google’s ARCore support page and Taiwan’s NCC has already cleared it for launch in the country.
If anything, we could see the Nokia 8.1 at some point this November 2018, although some markets may have to wait until December 2018 or even all the way to early 2019.
Note: We will keep updating this post with the latest Nokia 8.1 news, rumors, leaks, specs and more. Stay tuned!
