Nokia 5 Oreo update: Android 8.1 now rolling out

Android 8.0 Oreo is now officially out which means it’s that time of the year when tech-savvy consumers start wondering if their device will ever be upgraded to the latest Android operating system.

But, if you are a Nokia 5 user, chances are pretty good. We mean, solid good. Nokia has talked about the software updates pretty seriously and looks forward to updating all of its devices released this year to Android 8.0 in near future and Oreo 8.1 later on.

Let’s find all there is to know about the Nokia 5 Android Oreo update.

Nokia 5 Oreo update release: When to Expect?

  • Oreo update confirmed by Nokia in November 2017
  • Oreo 8.1 released on 28 March 2018

Nokia 5 was launched with near stock Android (Nougat) out-of-the-box. Nokia didn’t overlay it with a heavy custom skin of its own like Samsung, LG, Huawei and other countless OEMs. This means HMD Global — the company that sells you phones under the brand name of Nokia — won’t have to go through all the trouble of customizing the entire Android 8.0 Oreo update with their own custom skin for the Nokia 5. Which in turn means, you won’t have to wait very long.

Well, we’ve seen it all as the first stable update to Oreo rolled out in early 2018 and later on followed by the update to Oreo 8.1 in late Q1 2018. As for Android P, it should be rolled out before the year ends or if worse comes to worst, in early 2019.

The Android Oreo update has a bunch of new features to offer, like the Picture in Picture mode, which allows you to overlay one app above the other thereby improving your multitasking experience. One downside though, is that the feature is strictly limited to situations that involve apps dealing with either images or videos only.

Then there are Notification Dots which allows you to check for notifications for a particular app from the home screen itself. We also have Notification Channels which categorizes all the notifications from a specific app group into a single channel thereby making a good use of your device’s screen real estate.
