A recent report by Canalys placed Nokia in the top 5 smartphone brands in Europe in Q1 2018 and all this is thanks to HMD Global’s decision to go with Android. This started in early 2017 when the company launched the Nokia 6 and later on, it was followed by the Nokia 3 and Nokia 5.
While the Nokia 6 has since been refreshed, we are yet to see successors to the Nokia 3 and Nokia 5. Details of the latter’s successor emerged a while ago, where the company confirmed that the Nokia 5 2018 is coming soon, however, there was no mention of Nokia 3 2018. But thanks to hawkeyed fans out there, we now have what is the first instance of the Nokia 3.1.
Nokia 3 2018 specs and features
It has been more than a year since HMD launched the Nokia 3 and naturally, people are anxious and want to know what’s in store as the successor to one of the best budget phones from 2017. This, we believe, is what led to Roland Quandt’s discovery of the Nokia 3 2018, but there isn’t much to talk about in regards to the specs and features. From the listing, though, we can tell that the Nokia 3 2018 will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.

Even though much of the specs are still unknown, we expect the Nokia 3 2018 to perfect the few things that HMD got wrong with the OG Nokia 3. For instance, a better camera than the 8MP we have at the moment and a switch to a Snapdragon 400 series chipset, especially now that the Nokia 6 2018 made the switch to the Snapdragon 600 series, would be a huge welcome.
Also, we wouldn’t mind a shift to USB-C for charging and data transfer, but we still love the 3.5mm audio jack. It’s unlikely that the Nokia 3 2018 will get the trendy 18:9 design, but we can expect subtle tweaks to the design, just like the Nokia 6 2018 with respect to the OG version.
The OG Nokia 3 doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner. Seeing that lots of devices in the sub-$150 category – a category we believe is where the Nokia 3 2018 belongs – have a fingerprint scanner, HMD would be shooting itself in the foot if it didn’t include this feature on the Nokia 3.1.
Nokia 3 2018 price and release date
As already pointed out, details of the Nokia 3 2018 have remained scarce and it’s not just about the specs and features. We know it’s already past the expected annual upgrade cycle and even though HMD remains silent on the Nokia 3.1 matter, we believe the phone’s launch isn’t too far away.
And despite the fact that the OG Nokia 3 was launched in February 2017, buyers had to wait until June to buy one. If anything, we are still within this timeframe and that the Nokia 3 2018 could be released in the coming weeks, perhaps in June or even July 2018.
