Motorola Moto Z4 update: Android Q is a go, but Android R not

Latest news

August 14th, 2019: Motorola has published the release notes for an upcoming Moto Z4 update. The update will bring fingerprint sensor improvements, Wi-Fi stability improvements, June 2019 security patch, and general bug fixes.

June 22, 2019: Motorola has confirmed that the Z4 would be eligible for only one Android version update. So, yes, while the Z4 will score the Android Q update — sometime in December 2019, we’d wager — you cannot expect the Android R update next year (or ever).

June 13, 2019: Moto Z4 users on Verizon can now download and install the May 2019 security patch that also brings improved device stability when the 5G Moto Mod is connected.

The software update is arriving as version PDF29.105-25-11, but it will take several days before every Z4 user receives the download notification.

June 04, 2019: Motorola’s new toy, the Moto Z4, will be available for purchase as from June 6th, but the company has already prepared a software update for the device.

The release notes point to bug fixes and stability improvements, but we still don’t know the exact bugs being fixed. Still, it’s great to see that Moto is up and running with the Moto Z4 software updates.

Moto Z4 Android Q update

  • Eligible for Android Q
  • Beta expected by November 2019
  • Stable update expected in December 2019
  • Android R is not in plans (only on major Android OS upgrade)

Devices in the flagship Moto Z series usually receive two major Android OS updates. Granted, the Moto Z4, which has Android Pie preinstalled, will be upgraded to Android Q but not the one after, Android R. Motorola recently let it be known that they have planned only one major Android update for the Z4.

That’s cruel, yes, but they are at least not hiding it. You can know when buying the device how many updates the device will get, and decide your buy accordingly.

As for when the Android Q update will be released, we can’t tell for sure, but it should come out before 2019 ends. You can expect the beta update to hit by November 2019. Check out the post below for more details on Android Q release date.
