For the latest Motorola Moto Z2 Force and Moto Z2 Play software updates, you are in the right place. On this page, you’ll find all that you need to know with respect to minor and major software updates for the Moto Z2 duo, including all carrier variants – be it their timelines, the changes they bring to the devices, the software version, and whatnot.
August 22, 2019: Latest update, ODS27.76-12-42-14, for the Verizon Z2 Play brings May and June security patches.
July 26, 2019: It’s been long due but the Android 9 Pie update is now available for the Verizon Moto Z2 Force users. The software version of the Pie update is PCX29.159-21 and besides the cool new feature from Android 9, it also brings 5G Moto Mod support, and for what it’s worth, June patch (yes, they have already announced the July patch, and not in some other world).
With Pie, you get new features like Gesture Navigation, Digital Wellbeing, Dark mode, App Actions, App Slices, Adaptive Brightness, Adaptive Battery, easier Screen Rotation, improved DND mode, new Material design, etc.
June 26, 2019: A bad news for Moto Z2 Force users at T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint. Motorola revealed that they won’t be preparing the Android Pie update for the Z2 Force sets at these three carriers and that software update for these devices ends now.
Moto Z2 Android 10 update
- Not eligible for Android 10
- Moto Z2 Play is not eligible either
Well, the Moto Z2 has surely run its course with major OS update now. The device won’t get the Android 10 update, at least officially — yes, installing a custom ROM is the only way you can have a taste of 10 on your Moto Z2, and there is no promise of how good that would be.
The Verizon’s Z2 was treated with Android Pie, but even the same was not released for the other variants of the device. So, there is no probability of the Z2 Force getting 10 update now.
We can’t complain about the 10 update because that’s what OEMs normally do — they give two major OS updates to their flagship devices. Released at the same time as Z2, Samsung’s Galaxy S8, S8 Plus and Galaxy Note 8 won’t be getting Android 10 update either.
Same goes for the Moto Z2 Play too, but that’s hardly surprising as the Z2 Play didn’t get Android Pie either. We do expect Android 10-based custom ROMs to become available for the Z2 Play too, though.
Moto Z2 Android Pie update
- Released for Moto Z2 Force in Brazil
- Released for Verizon in the US on 25th July
- Won’t be released for AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint or any other carrier
Motorola took a U-turn on Android Pie update and made it Verizon-only. They said they needed to give Verizon users Android Pie in order to make the device support the Moto Mod 5G accessory that gets you Verizon’s 5G.
On July 25, Motorola and Verizon began seeding out Android Pie for the latter’s variant. Motorola has confirmed it won’t be rolling out Pie for any other carrier, including Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile.
