Motorola Moto G7, G7 Plus, G7 Power, and G7 Play Android 10 update, security updates, and more: G7 Plus in the UK gets Android 10

Moto G7 Android 10

Motorola is not the most generous OEM on the market when it comes to bringing software updates to older devices, but usually, they are quite good at keeping their newest smartphones up to date. In this section, we’ll take a look at the company’s latest mid-range devices, the Moto G7, Moto G7 Plus, Moto G7 Play, and Moto G7 Power, and discuss everything related to upcoming/recently released software updates, Android 10, and more at in various regions including the US carriers AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

Android 10 features

Will Moto G7, G7 Plus, G7 Power, and G7 Play get Android 10 update?

The Moto G6 and Moto G5 may miss out on the upcoming Android release (formerly Android Q), but the G7 users should get a taste of Android 10 sooner rather than later. All G7 phones come with Android 9 Pie out of the box, and with Motorola ensuring at least one major Android OS update, users can afford to look forward to the upcoming Google OS release.

Motorola usually doesn’t change things too much, preserving Android’s pristine form. However, that doesn’t necessarily guarantee superfast updates.

When will Moto G7 get the Android 10 update?

  • May 04: Android 10 is rolling out to Moto G7 Play as part of the company’s soak test (You can download install the soak test build at your own risk from here)
  • April 08: Users of G7 Plus in the UK are receiving Android 10 now
  • March 10: Moto G7 Plus users in Australia are getting Android 10 on their units
  • January 23: G7 Plus received Android 10
  • G7, G7 Play and G7 Power are expected to get Android 10 in Q2 2020

The Android 10 update will be the first and also the last OS update for the Moto G7 series that includes standard Moto G7, Moto G7 Plus, Moto G7 Play, and Moto G7 Power.

Please note that the release date will differ for the various Moto G7 handsets. We expect the standard Moto G7 and Moto G7 Plus will get the update soo, but it may take an age before the Android 10 update shows up for the G7 Power and G7 Play. We saw something similar happen with the Moto G6 Play last year, and even though it may not sound fair, it’s a standard for Motorola.

What’s new in Moto G7 Android 10 update

Android 10 features

The Android 10 update from Google comes with a lot of new features: Dark mode, improved Gestures Navigation, better Sharing Menu, Live Caption, Bubbles, better Permissions management, Accent Colors and Themes, and more.

The Moto G7 will get all of these features, and then some more that Motorola may add on its own. No info on the Motorola’s Android 10 update has been leaked so far, unlike Samsung’s S10 Android 10 update, thus we don’t have any idea about what Motorola plans to add to stock Android 10 update.

UI-wise though, it would retain the stock Android 10 UI, and that’s a good thing — many people buy Moto phones for this very solid reason.

  1. The Android 10 soak test build has been released by Motorola at last for variants of the Moto G7 Play. A little buggy in some regards but overall it looks as though the official release will be smooth and responsive. Owners of the Moto G7 Play can grab the soak test ROM at XDA at this link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g7-play/how-to/android-10-soak-test-t4093947

  2. The Android 10 soak test build has been released by Motorola for all variants (except Verizon) of the Moto G7 Play. It does not require root to install, but does require an unlocked bootloader and fastboot mode commands. Although the soak test is a bit buggy in some areas, it lays good expectations for the upcoming official Android 10 release. The soak test ROM can be downloaded at XDA.

  3. I understand phone company providers want to sell phones. Not everyone is going to go out every year and buy the newest handset. Why they they don’t offer a paid option to upgrade the os to their handsets is short sighted. They’re losing money! Instead they’d rather you go the route of going online & rooting your phone. Absolute “asinine” business plan. I’ll go the Magisk or Lineage route & root my phone instead. Do the math: take a 10,000 & multiply that by $100.00 it’s a cool million. That’s using small numbers. Perhaps I will go into business for myself with my son who’s handy at it & charge a small fee & laugh all the way to the bank. Easy Money.

    1. That’s exactly why most Android devices running Android 8.1.0 Oreo and newer versions are Project Treble supported, which allows users to flash and boot a GSI (Generic System Image) of the latest Android OS, bootable by the device’s stock kernel. Root isn’t required — only an unlocked bootloader and the latest ADB & Fastboot utilities for Windows, Linux or Mac. Project Treble supported devices are no longer at the mercy of sporadic OTA updates or the need to install a custom ROM.

  4. I just wanted to know if the new android 10 update for Motorola g7 power would give the action to use wi-fi calling seen as I have little to no signal at home and don’t have that wi-fi calling option yet so if anyone knows if that comes in the new update please tell me thank you
