March 07, 2019: Motorola recently published release notes for Moto G6 Play with April 2019 security patches and we obviously knew right away that this was a mistake and instead, the release notes are for March 2019 patches. Well, a day later, we have the latest Moto G6 release notes for the U.S. and guess what, the same error is present.
Of course, we still believe this is supposed to read March 2019 security patch, so we hope Motorola makes changes to the release notes pretty soon to avoid any confusion.
February 16, 2019: Motorola Brazil has announced that an update to Android 9 Pie for the Moto G6 is ready to begin rolling out. The update, apparently, arrives with the December 2018 security patch, but an update to a newer version should arrive soon after.
February 06, 2019: Motorola has updated the official Moto G6 software page in the U.S. with Android 9 Pie release notes, implying that the OS has or is ready to begin rolling out. The update includes the same security patch the company released about two weeks ago – January 2019.
Being an OTA rollout, it will take some time before all Moto G6 units get the download notification, so be patient. Also, the update has been confirmed for the U.S. market, so it may take even much longer to arrive in other markets. We’ll let you know when it comes to your market.
January 23, 2019: When unveiling the Moto G6 series, Motorola said software updates will be rolled out after 60 to 90 days. That said, its nothing strange that the company has a new update for the Moto G6 since it last did so back in September 2018. The new OTA brings along a new Android security patch for January 2019 alongside improved support for Android Messages.
Since its available over the air, your patience will be needed for it might take several days before the download notification arrives on your G6.

Moto G6 Android Pie update
- Android 9 Pie is now available in the U.S. and Brazil
- More regions to get Pie soon
The Moto G6 got the first update to Android 9 Pie in late January 2019 as a soak test in Brazil and about two weeks later, Motorola U.S. made an official statement confirming the availability of Pie for the G6 in the country. A little over a week later, a stable update started rolling out in Brazil.
The update should spread out to other regions within the month of February and March 2019. The Moto G6 Plus already received the Pie update at the end of December 2018 while the Moto G6 Play joins the standard G6 in receiving the Pie update.
If Motorola is to be believed, the Moto G6, G6 Plus, and G6 Play won’t go past Pie, which is such a shame at a time when the likes of Samsung, Huawei, and even Asus are rolling out two major OS updates to equally budget handsets.
