Motorola keeping Moto Mods alive with the Moto Z4 and Moto Z4 Play

Moto Z4 render

Motorola didn’t release a true successor to the Moto Z2 Force. Yes, the Moto Z3 was unveiled in August 2018, but going by last year’s standards, it wasn’t a flagship phone. Apparently, the company has other ideas this year as it looks to keep the Moto Mods alive.

Details of two Motorola phones assumed to be the Moto Z4 and Moto Z4 Play have appeared online, prompting suggestions that the company isn’t relenting on its push for modularity in smartphones.

Press renders of the Moto Z4, the flagship variant, have been published by 91 Mobiles and no doubt they have ties to the Moto Z lineup thanks to the 16-pin pogo connector on the back. This can only make sense if Motorola wants to keep using the same Moto Mods from years ago.

The front shows a off cool-looking edge-to-edge display screen with a waterdrop-style notch that houses the selfie camera. Unlike recent Moto Z flagships, though, the leaked Moto Z4 has a single-lens camera on the back believed to be a massive 48MP unit. Being a high-end phone, it’s also rumored that the Z4 has a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB RAM, and will run Android Pie out of the box.

Reports coming from elsewhere suggest that Motorola is also lining up a midrange Moto Z4 Play handset that could be announced alongside the flagship variant. Codenamed foles, the Z4 Play has reportedly cleared FCC with model number XT1980-3, XDA Developers can confirm.

The publication further says that the Moto Z4 Play will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor, 4GB or 6GB RAM, 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, and a 3600mAh battery. To fill up the battery, the device will support 18W fast charging technology via a USB-C port.

Like the flagship Moto Z4, the Play variant will allegedly come with a 48MP main camera that captures a default photo resolution of 12MP while the selfie will get a 25MP unit. Whether the Z4 Play will also get a waterdrop-style display like the Moto Z4 is unknown, but the XDA report points to a 6.39-inch FHD+ display screen. In terms of software, Android 9 Pie will run the show out of the box.

Motorola is also said to be testing several new Moto Mods that include 360-degree camera mod, Hasselblad mod, and another mod for wireless charging, which seems pretty cool.

Going by the FCC documents, the Moto Z4 Play will be sold unlocked in North America and through Verizon Wireless, in Asia-Pacific, Brazil, Latin America, and Europe. As usual, some regions will get dual-SIM variants while others will also get NFC support.
