Moto X Play scores a CyanogenMod 12.1 custom ROM!

The most popular of all, the CyanogenMod custom ROM is now available for the Motorola Moto X Play. The official ROM from the team is yet to come out, but the unofficial one should be good enough to become your daily driver.

It’s CM12.1, meaning it’s based on Android 5.1.1. And comes with new Theme engine that we love, and is one of the first reasons you want CM.

That apart, the ROM is already rooted, but you need to enable it from Settings > Developer options. Enable the Superuser access from there.

Plus, gets you cool set of features and options that make Android customization damn sweet on the ROM.

To be able to install the CyanogenMod ROM on your Moto X Play, you are gonna need TWRP recovery. Don’t worry if you don’t have it as we got you completely covered. Just see the guide below.

Downloads

  • Moto X Play CM ROM — Link | File: cm-12.1-20150917-UNOFFICIAL-lux.zip (263.9 MB)

  • Google Apps (Gapps) — Link
(→ Go to above page. And then select these options: ARM64, 5.1 and Mini. Then hit the download button right below that.)

→ Note that the ROM is untested as of now, upon it launch. So, athough it should be working, we cannot confirm it so. Sure let us know how it worked out for you.

Supported devices

  • Motorola Moto X Play, codename lux
  • Don’t try this on any other Android device whatsoever!

→ You must check the codename of your device using Droid Info app, available for free installation. If the app shows the same codename as mentioned above, then it’s compatible, otherwise now, in which case don’t use this page.

Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files. Sometimes, Odin installation may delete everything on your device!

How to Install

→ Required: First make sure you have Moto X Play TWRP recovery installed on your device.

Step 1. Download the Google Apps (gapps) and CM12.1 ROM file from above.

Step 2. Transfer the CyanogenMod 12.1 ROM file to your Moto X Play. Remember the file’s location.

Step 3. Boot your Moto X PLlay into recovery mode. If you are rooted, you can use Quick Boot app from play store.

Manual method:

  1. Power off your device.
  2. Press and hold Power + Volume down to boot into fastboot mode.
  3. Now, use Volume button to bring up recovery menu, and then press power button to select it. You will enter recovery mode soon, and should see TWRP is you have it installed. If you see 3e recovery, then it means you haven’t installed TWRP, a must for this.

Step 4. In TWRP, tap on Wipe, and then do the swipe action at bottom to do a factory reset of your device.

Step 5. Now we install the CM12.1 ROM.

In TWRP recovery (v2.8.7.0 or newer), tap on Install > locate the CM12.1 file and tap on it. Then do the Swipe action at bottom to begin flashing the update.

Also install the Gapps file just like that. Go to main screen, and use Install menu again.

Step 6. Once you have flashed CM12.1 and Gapps, tap on wipe cache/dalvik cache button shown right after that.

Step 7. Then tap on Reboot System button to restart your Moto X Play.

That’s it. Wait for Moto X Play to finish booting up, it may take some time. Once it does, check the Settings > About device. You should have CyanogenMod build there.
