Moto G4 Play is now receiving Android 7.1.1 Nougat update

Moto G4 Play Android 7.1.1 Nougat

The Motorola Moto G4 Play was expected to start getting the update to Android Nougat back in June 2017 but this didn’t materialize.

In fact, the phone has been testing the update to Android 7.1.1 Nougat since July 2017 and it’s surprising that the stable version is only rolling out now. From what we know with Motorola soak tests, it appears that the Moto G4 Play software had some issues that took longer than expected to iron out. Nonetheless, it’s finally here.

Users of the Moto G4 Play are now reporting that the budget phone is getting an OTA update to the newer v7.1.1 of Nougat, but it seems there will be no Android Oreo for this handset. The other two models in the Moto G4 series received the Nougat treat last year and even though late, it’s better than not getting it at all. Besides installing Android 7.1.1 Nougat, the update also installs the November 2017 Android security patch, which is a little old, but not for a budget phone of the Moto G4 Play’s caliber.

This is an OTA update and as such, it’ll take some time before hitting all Moto G4 Play units. Still, you can skip the queue by trying a manual update via the Settings menu.
