LG Oreo update: Android 8.0 for LG V20 now rolling out on AT&T

lg Oreo update release date

We expected LG to hand the G6 users an Oreo before the end of November 2017, but LG surely surprised us when it opted to roll out a beta version of Android Oreo for the V30 (and V30+) towards the end of last November. LG was good with Android OS upgrades in the last 2-3 years, but now it seems they don’t believe in quicker update release as they once did.

LG G6 Oreo update

Android 8.0 release date: April 30, 2018 (Korea), May 21 U.S.

It was always going to be simple: if not the V30, then G6 would be the first device from LG to get Android 8.0 update. The update is not yet available in the U.S. and other parts of the world, but it’s now rolling out in Korea, beginning April 30.

Update: Beginning May 21, Verizon has started rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo to the LG G6. It becomes the first U.S. carrier to release the G6 Oreo update, similar to what happened with the V30 Oreo update. AT&T started dishing out the Oreo update on June 6 while those on T-Mobile joined the party on June 29.

LG V30 and V30+ Oreo update

Released in December 2017

A few days to the end of last year, LG began rolling out Android Oreo update for the V30 and V30+ in Korea. LG had been beta testing its Android 8.0 update for about a month. The Oreo update arrived as software version V20e and unlike the Verizon version, it was sized 1411.90MB.

Android 8.0 Oreo update for unlocked LG V30 was rolled out in mid-January, coming in as software version US99818F. On March 9, Verizon started rolling out the OS to the V30 while T-Mobile joined the party on May 4, only to halt the update on May 12 due to bugs, but we don’t have an exact date of when it’ll resume. On the other hand, AT&T started rolling out Oreo OTA to the V30 on March 28, 2018, which included March 1st security patches.

Update [July 13, 2018]: After months of waiting, LG V30 Plus users in India can finally dance to the same tune as those in other regions. In addition to Oreo, LG India says the update will turn your V30 Plus into a V30S ThinQ, meaning you are getting all the AI stuff that make the ThinQ variant what it is.

LG Q6 Oreo update

Oct 31, 2017: The G6 was recently found on Geekbench running Oreo. Although that doesn’t really mean a lot, we have a feeling we would hear something official on Oreo from LG really soon.

Even a budget Android device is guaranteed to receive at least one big Android OS update, at least from the major popular OEMs like LG, Motorola, Huawei, Samsung, HTC, etc. So even though the LG Q6 runs on Nougat at the moment, it’s guaranteed to receive Android 8.0 update.

When the LG Q6 Oreo comes out is another tricky question, though. We are sure that LG would have his hands busy with Android 8.0 rollout for G6 and V30 at the beginning, but it would seem fair if it decides to work on 8.0 for G6 and V20, before taking up Q6 and other mid-range devices.

Until an official announcement drops from LG, it’s hard to say when 8.0 for Q6 would be released, but if we are to guess, a March 2018 rollout looks likely.

LG G5 Oreo update

Update: LG has published the Oreo kernel sources for the device’s Korean variants, an indicator that the OS will begin rolling out soon. Of course, it will take some time before the update starts showing up on LG G5 variants sold outside Korea. [More details].

G5 was among the first few Android devices to receive Nougat last year, which is why we think of G6 to beat other Android devices like Galaxy S8 and HTC U11 for Oreo release. But because LG didn’t give G4 Nougat treatment, it raises doubt on G5 Oreo release.

We, however, think that last year was an exception LG is less likely to repeat. We could see LG begin rollout of Oreo update for LG G5 sometime in Q1 of 2018.

As is the case with LG software updates, the G5 Oreo rollout could begin in Korea first, followed by other regions and carriers around the world.

LG G5 SE/Lite Oreo update

Having upgraded the LG G5 Lite (or LG G5 SE) to Nougat from Marshmallow, there are only slim chances of LG releasing an 8.0 update for the device. The device is a mid-range, which often see only one major Android OS support from OEMs, and that’s how it is.

LG V20

Expected release date: Released on 24 July 2018 in Korea, 31 July in USA (Sprint)

On July 24, 2018, the first Android Oreo update for the LG V20 was spotted online and as expected, it was only happening in Korea. LG V20 handsets with model numbers F800L and F800S were reported to have received Oreo updates in LG’s home country, suggesting that the rest of the globe would indeed join the party in August as reported earlier by Canada’s Fido.

For those in the U.S. and use Sprint as their carrier, the Oreo 8.0 update is also rolling out as of July 31, 2018. On August 23, AT&T started dishing out Oreo updates for the V20.

LG V10

Expected release date: Not eligible

Although a solid device with a cool specs sheet and all, the LG V10 won’t receive Oreo love. The device is already past its software update lifecycle, and it would be cruel to expect LG to update a three-year-old device with a major Android OS update.

Lest the device gets a breath of fresh air via a custom ROM like LineageOS 15.1, which comes off running on Android 8.1 and is already available for a variety of devices. Check our LineageOS 15 device list here.

LG K10 Oreo update

Expected release date: Q3 2018

There are two editions of LG K10, one released in 2016, while other, a more recent one, released in 2017 and thus aptly dubbed LG K10 2017. Well, only one of them would see the sunlight in Oreo. And that’s LG K10 2017, that comes with 2GB RAM, and is identified with model no. M250N and X400.

The original K10 2016 received an update from Lollipop to Marshmallow and that is the end of the road for the device — as one major Android OS update is all they get. The LG K10 2017 comes with Nougat, and thus would have Android 8.0 as its only one major Android update.

When exactly the Oreo update will be rolled out is still a mystery to us, but we hope to see the update coming out in Q3 2018, now that our initial expectations of a Q2 2018 rollout are no more.

LG K8 Oreo update

Expected release date: Q3 2018

Like the K10 above, only the LG K8 2017 edition stands a chance to receive the Oreo update from LG. There is no confirmation about this yet, but given that these devices get only one Android OS update that involves a change in name of the version, it looks very likely that Oreo would arrive on K8 2017 sooner or later. The LG K8 2017 is known by its model no. M200N, X240, and US215 (US Cellular).

However, the K8 handset that was released in 2016 by LG won’t receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update. That’s sure.

LG Q8

Expected release date: Q3 2018

With 4GB RAM and a solid Snapdragon 820 processor under the hood, the Q8 is more than capable of running the latest update of Android OS, the 8.0. Launched with Android 7.0, the device should see the Oreo update coming down as an OTA in the year 2018.

When exactly is a matter of pure guess, but we would go by Q3 2018.

LG Stylus 3

Expected release date: Q3 2018

The LG Stylus 3 runs on Nougat right now, and it’s powered by 3GB RAM and MT6750 processor, all of which makes it an ideal candidate for Oreo OS. Given that the Stylus 3 is a budget range handset, it naturally won’t receive the Android 8.0 update as fast the premium flagships do, which is why a Q3 2018 release looks very likely for the device.

On the flipside, we’ve grown to know the issues that follow MediaTek-powered smartphones with respect to software updates, but still, we do expect the Stylus 3 to jump aboard the Oreo ship at some point in future.

Do let us know what you think about LG’s Android Oreo plans?

Given LG’s past history on releasing latest Android OS update, we can assume safely that LG would be quick to roll out Oreo OTA for G6, V30, and V20, but would it able to follow the Android 8.0 update for budget range of devices too, like Q6, Q8, K8/K10 2017, Stylus 3, etc?

    no!

  2. The x power 2 is getting android 8.1 Update

  3. I doubt Stylo 3 Plus will get Oreo update as the Stylo 4 is going to be released and it has Oreo and the hardware spec difference is nothing much, nice marketing move on LG part, this is my first and last LG phone as they do not seem to support their products except the flagship, i came from an iphone 5s which got three different OS upgrades and that was not a flagship device, seen sony upgrade non flagship as well my wifes samsung A5 is scheduled for oreo on June 25, no improvement in my eyes since LG opened their software center, they produce nice product but after support is worth something.

  4. Why do you have the K20 Plus listed as eligible for an update expected Q2 2018 and then list it as one of the phones ineligible for the update at the end of the article? Which is it?

  5. g5se receives Android oreo?

    1. No, it won’t.
