Keep root on OF1 update for Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge using this method!

You must be knowing that already that if you update your Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge to latest OF1 update using OTA, or Odin, then you will lose root access first of all, can’t root it again, and can’t downgrade back to pre-OF1 build to root again. Hence, we warned you about not updating to OF1 build for now.

But anyway, one of the many cool guys over at XDA, trailblazer101, found out a way to upgrade to OF1 build on your Verizon S6 Edge that is root friendly — root is fully retained but you need to be rooted already — and doesn’t upgrades root-blocking and downgrade-preventing partitions.

Basically, you flash a custom made with OF1 selected as base, or only system and modem partition of the OF1 used, while rest of the package comes from pre-OF1 root-friendly build, OE2. Thus, you need to be on OE2 firmware for this, for smooth functioning of the ROM.

If you are not on OE2 update already, you will need to do so. And then root it too. Because this root access you gain on OE2 is retained on OF1 update too. For download links of OE2 update and a method to install, and OF1 root-friendly upgrade for your Verizon S6 Edge, check out the guide below.

Do note that would block the future updates on your device obviously, because your device’s boot partition is not on OF1 update, while future updates will check for OF1 only. Even then, it’s totally worth it. When you 5.1.1 update has arrived, and has been rooted too, you could use a similar method like this to upgrade — and there will be one such way, as we have seen previously too for many such devices.

There is even a deodexed version available of the ROM, and this one contains all updated apps from Google. Rest all remains same, except that it’s deodexed too.

You have to install this ROM using FlashFire android app, which requires root access to do the flashing. TWRP isn’t available anyway, hence no question of using that. While flashing the ROM — whether regular or deodexed — take care to also flash the FlashMe package developer has provided. That makes the installation easy, plus, fully compatible.

Let’s see the procedure to install OF1 with root access retained in flesh now.

Backup necessary stuff. Installing this ROM may wipe your device, so create a have backup of contacts, photos, videos and other files.

  1. Make sure your Verizon S6 Edge is running a build ending with OE2. Go to Settings > About device, and check the build no. for this. If not, then download the OE2 firmware from here, and install it using the guide for firmware installation given here (use Method 1 there that uses Odin!).
  2. Also make sure you have root access. If not, then for OE2 build, download the PingPong root app, and use it to root your device. Once you have root access on OE2 build, continue to step 3.
  3. It’s good to set the ‘Screen timeout’ to 10 minutes under Settings > Display.
  4. Download the ROM and the FlashME file, and transfer them to phone’s storage. Remember the location where you put them.
  5. Download the Flashfire android app that we will use to flash the ROM:
    1. Login into Google using the same Gmail ID that you are using on phone. Go to Google+ page and join the community.
    2. Next, sign up here to be able to install the app from play store and receive updates.
    3. Use the play store link provided thereafter to get to pay store page of the app and install it. It may take hours before it shows up for you in play store. You can only wait.
