India to become second largest smartphone market, surpass US

Motorola debuted its Moto Z2 Play in India today, but the Android OEM also unveiled a significant statistic during its presentation that shouldn’t be overlooked: the growing importance of the India market.

According to Motorola’s slide, India is poised to become the second largest smartphone market in the world, surpassing even the US market. India is also set to ship 127 million smartphones this year, making its smartphone shipments more than Brazil, Japan, and Indonesia combined.

What this suggests is that consumers in India are growing in their love of mobile devices and investing in more mobile devices, and Motorola, therefore, has a growing interest in bringing its low-cost smartphones such as the Moto Z2 Play, the Moto C and Moto C Plus, announced in India this week, and other budget-friendly offerings to the market.

Motorola is not alone in its assessment. Xiaomi has created a second manufacturing power plant in India under the #MakeInIndia campaign, and Huawei has pledged at least $10 million to the Indian market to propel its Honor sub-brand to new heights. Lenovo, ZTE, Coolpad, and Meizu, among others, set their sights on launching affordable 4G-enabled smartphones in India as early as 2015, so India’s been a huge market for some time now. Surpassing the US in the future will be a large milestone.
